Hopefully, our niece, Nancy Smithback, won’t mind if I share what she wrote to me the day after Ron’s passing, “What I can say is that my godfather was drop-dead handsome, quick to smile, kind, spiritual and a warrior.”

Wonderful teacher and coach who did so much to develop soccer in the Madison area and state of Wisconsin. His positive influence will endure. A life well lived, RIP. Thank you!

Ron was evangelical about soccer. He nurtured and developed a long list of soccer players in Madison that continue to share his love of the game. His legacy is cemented in the continuing work of his acolytes. Ironically I was in Scottsdale also attending a meeting when I learned of his passing. Sadly I won't be able to attend the memorial as I will be in Texas at my daughter's graduation. My thoughts are with everyone. We are better because of Ron's efforts. Peace.

Madison has lost a great teacher and advocate for soccer, its players and coaches. I remember taking Ron’s Sunday morning soccer class for Moms. As a novice soccer coach Ron would explain to me drills and techniques to use for my team. Ron would say you draw more bees with honey and frequently used the word “sugar.” Ron was a wonderful man whose legacy will be the number of lives he touched.

Ron was a good friend and teammate. Always had a smile and a good word. I will miss him
