Obituary
MADISON-Janet S. Roberts went to her heavenly Father on Wednesday, April 24, 2019, at SSM Health, St. Mary's Hospital. She was born on July 6, 1937, in Milwaukee, the daughter of Leonard and Marjorie (Hall) Smith. Janet graduated from the University of California San Francisco with a bachelor's degree in nursing. She was united in marriage to David Roberts on June 18, 1960. Janet touched many lives with love and support over her 40-year nursing career. She also supported her husband, David during his career as a pastor for the United Church of Christ parishes in LaCrosse, Brodhead, Dodgeville and Prescott. She also enjoyed working at the Mercantile. Janet loved to travel, especially to San Francisco and Yosemite National Park. She enjoyed music and watching the Capital City Band in Madison. Janet is survived by daughter, Sarah Roberts, Kathryn (Tom) Kellen and Jon (Kristina) Roberts; grandchildren, Jessica (William) McIlhenny, Brittany Kellen, Lara Roberts and Lidija Roberts; great-grandchildren, Joy and Charles McIlhenny; brother, Gordon (Margaret) Smith; and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, David. A memorial service will be held at OAKWOOD VILLAGE PRAIRIE RIDGE, TREE OF LIFE CHAPEL, 5565 Tancho Drive, Madison, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, 2019, with the Rev. Wayne Shannon presiding. Jan and I have been friends for 48 years. We worked together as nurses in Dodgeville and then for many years we went to the morning Coffee Concerts at the Ordway in St. Paul. We would make a day of it by having lunch after the concerts. I will miss my dear friend.

What a wonderful person. As a teenager I babysat quite often for Jan and Dave, and enjoyed watching their kids grow up while they were in Dodgeville. I will always remember Jan as one of the warmest and most gracious women I have ever known. Thanks for being a wonderful role model, Jan!

Jan was my oldest and dearest friend. I have known her since Junior High School. I was blessed to be her Matron of Honor at her and Dave's wedding where I left the wedding ring in the changing room of the church! As you may suspect, they were most gracious about it and put it down as a "fond memory" of their long and caring marriage. Jan, you will always be in my thoughts and prayers.

Jan was one of our volunteers here at the Wisconsin Conference and she always brought so many people with her. I could always count on Jan (and her crew) to help with any mailing we had. Always a sweet and cheerful woman - I will miss her hugs.

We here in Prescott Wisconsin have a lot of fun memories we shared with both Dave and Jan. Jan was a great nurse at our nursing home. She was always great with her patients. She and Dave were great people and always willing to help when they could.

We have the fondest memories of Jan and Dave. David was such a faithful and loving pastor who offered us all an example of what it means to attempt to live life according to the Beatitudes. Jan was not only a gifted nurse; she was a loving wife and mother. Jan and Dave were among the earliest supporters of the "What If? Foundation" while members of Lake Edge UCC in Madison. The Foundation was begun in the Wisconsin Conference in 2000. Our guess is it would not have thrived as wonderfully as it has, feeding more than 1,000 hot meals daily to needy children in Haiti and building a K-13 school for kids in Port-au-Prince.
