Obituary

VERONA - Barbara (Jones) Coyne was born in Livingston, Wis., on April 20, 1929, to parents, Leslie and Grace (Livingston) Jones. Shortly after her birth, the family relocated to South Wayne.

Barbara loved living in a little town of 300 people where she knew everybody. She played snare drums in the band, and participated in forensics and cheerleading. She also enjoyed shooting sports, and she had fond memories of working in the local grocery store. She was very close with her sisters, Jean (Don) Swanson and Norma (George) Maddrell.

After graduating high school in 1947, Barbara studied math and social work at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Barbara and Mike Coyne married in Evansville, Wis., on June 19, 1948. They raised six children and divorced in 1974.

The family lived in Richland Center, Milwaukee, Los Altos, Calif., and eventually settled in the Madison area in 1971. They also spent many summers at Fish Lake, Wis., with extended family.

Barbara became a realtor and then spent the remainder of her career as a research librarian at the Forest Products Laboratory. Barbara was known for her delicious baked goods. She was also an avid reader, bridge player, and an enormous Badgers basketball fan. More than anything, she enjoyed spending simple, everyday time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and she tried her best to never miss any event that they participated in. During this time, she earned the nickname "Granny" as she became known to everyone.

Barb resided at Ingleside Communities in Mount Horeb for the last five of her 95-year life. Her favorite part of Ingleside was spending time with her resident friends in the activities room and frequent drives through the surrounding countryside, visiting places and people from her past. Barbara passed away surrounded by loved ones on Sunday, March 24, 2024.

Barbara is survived by her six children, Susan (Andrew) Krembs, Jane Coyne, David (Joy) Coyne,

Thomas Coyne, John (Vicky) Coyne and Robert (Wendy) Coyne; 17 grandchildren and two step-grandchildren, as well as their spouses and significant others; 14 great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Alice Gundlach; many much-loved nieces, nephews, and their families; and many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her firstborn child; her parents; and her two sisters.

Granny lived next to my family for many years, she was also known as Granny to us! I wish I could have visited her more after she moved. I am out of town and won’t be able to come to the funeral, but my deepest sympathy to Jane, Jason and the rest of your family ❤️ Becky B.

I was Barb’s landlord and friend for 12 years at Sugar Creek. I have to say she was SO INCREDIBLY proud of every single one of her grandchildren! She talked about and bragged about all of you constantly. And that laugh… she was truly one in a million and will be missed by many🥰! Oh and the cookies… she would bring warm cookies to my office when she baked! When Bob, (maintenance at Sugar Creek) and I changed properties, one of our new residents brought us cookies and we looked at each other and said “these aren’t Barb’s!”.

I was so sorry to hear of Barb's passing. I've been a night housekeeper at Ingelside for several months and have become very fond of Barb. She was a very sweet lady. I will miss her sweet little smile. My deepest sympathies to her family. Fly high Ms. Barb. You will be a beautiful angel. Tara Roessler

I lived one mile from my mother-in-law for for most of my 30+ years of marriage. We cut a deal that she could stop by unannounced as long as she did not mention / notice a messy house (she was an impeccable housekeeper). She took the deal as long as she always found the grandchildren well taken care of. When she visited she would sweep up the kids and ignore the mess. We never had a cross word or misunderstanding. I felt she had earned the right to any opinion she had and found her thoughts interesting and wise. We all know she had a gift of listening and I will try and do more of that with her as my role model. Our relationship was a blessing I will cherish forever. Vicky
