Obituary
BLACK EARTH -Eleanor Hugins Asmuth of Black Earth, Wis. passed away peacefully Monday, April 1, 2019 at Sauk Prairie Hospital after a short illness. She was 96.
Eleanor Asmuth was born on Jan. 3, 1923, in Littleton, Colo. She was the second child of Charles Benjamin Hugins and Nora Hale Hugins. She was a World War II Veteran of the United States Navy. Eleanor attended Littleton High School. Upon graduation, she attended Denver University and also a began what was to become a life-long career in teaching taking a position as a first-and-second grade teacher in a Littleton area elementary school. After attending Denver University for two years Eleanor joined the United States Navy in which she served in the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) for the duration of World War II. While in the navy, she operated Link Trainers and taught celestial navigation to navy pilots in training. At the conclusion of the war, Eleanor completed her B.S. Degree in Chemistry at Denver University. She then enrolled as a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin in Madison where she began studies in chemistry. She later switched to mathematics and earned a Master of Science Degree in 1949.
In 1947, at a square dance in the Great Hall of the Wisconsin Memorial Union, she met for the first time John Asmuth, a graduate student in Electrical Engineering. On Aug. 27, 1948, John and Eleanor were united in a marriage of nearly 70 wonderful years.
In 1962, when Eleanor and John’s children were old enough to attend school, Eleanor resumed her teaching career to take a position of Math and Chemistry Teacher at Black Earth High School. She continued in that position at Wisconsin Heights High School when the Black Earth and Mazomanie Schools consolidated to form the Wisconsin Heights School District. About that time, she became the Chairman of the Mathematics Department, a position she held until her retirement. In addition to math and chemistry, Eleanor was always very interested in computer science. She taught computer programming at the high school beginning in 1970, making Wisconsin Heights High School the very first high school in the area to offer computer programming.
In 1986, Eleanor and John began an energetic three decades of retirement together. They were active in square dancing, cross-country skiing, bicycling, and international travel. Their biggest joy was seeing their family grow in numbers with each new wedding and birth.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband, John Asmuth; her brother, George B. Hugins; her sons, Richard and Robert; and a newborn daughter. Eleanor is survived by her son, Charles Asmuth and wife Jane; daughter-in-law, Claudia (wife of Richard); grandchildren, John Asmuth and wife Stephanie, Peter Asmuth, Mark Asmuth and Laura Asmuth and husband Mark Hwang; and two great-grandsons, Trent Jay Asmuth and Gavin Ludwig Asmuth.

If ever you wanted to teach loving & caring of a spouse all you need do was to look to this couple. They both were extremely intelligent but never know-it all’s. They were the most wonderful couple. We met them right after they learned square dancing in their area after they turned 70. On their combined 90th birthdays Dave called a dance for them. We called it their 180 Birthday Party.
They came to a weekend of square dancing in Dubuque IA. When they were leaving the car’s battery was dead. John made no big deal of it said that she had left her laptop computer on from the GPS they used to get to the dance. Laptops weren’t yet as popular as now & most of us didn’t have GPS. I didn’t even know what the letters meant. They were fun to be around & Eleanors stories about the Navy & Link Training were fascinating. She had told me of teaching computer programming to high school children & that seemed almost like something out of the twilight zone. She was fastinating.
While they were at the Cleveland Clinic she called me and told me of John’s heart condition & what the Drs asked him. “If we do this surgery & give you a heart what are you going to do with it?” I told Eleanor to ask them what was he going to do without the surgery—-die? She was a dear friend with a special soul.
They were the couple that we wished we had met 5 years sooner. Love you John & Ellie!

We have been square dancing for over 30 years now and so remember the good times we had dancing with them in various parts of the United States. Your parents always had wonderful memories to share with us! As we were always asking where they had been and what was their next adventure to be! Eleanor and John will both be missed by many of us in the square dance world, etc. Was sorry to hear of Eleanors death, but know she is with John in heaven! Yellowrocks(Hugs) to all of their family! Nellie,
I hope you know how much of a mark you and John left on my heart. I’m so glad I came into your lives in 2010. It started out taking care of the outside birds, garbage, and compost. As the years went by and things got harder for you and John to do, I took over other tasks of grocery shopping, picking up the bird seed, peanuts for the squirrels, suet for the birds, and cat food for TATER TOT!! I’m still feeding the birds, squirrels, and Tater Tot. Thanks for taking time out of your square dance class and teaching Collin and I. I still laugh at the time you and John were supposed to bring me home and you left me. When I think of you I think of homemade bread, you out in your garden with your hands in the dirt. I put the symbol of the gardener on your wall as I know how much your flowers meant to you. I know you know how much I loved you and John. I miss getting your emails everyday stating that you were having a good day or you needed me to stop in on my way home. You fought your battle until the bitter end. Until we meet again Nellie, Love and MISS You a ton.

I had the honor of being seated in the presence of John and Eleanor Asmuth at a Wisconsin Heights HS Senior Awards ceremony a few years ago. After the scholarship s were all awarded, The receipent of a scholarship the Asmuths had funded came forward to thank them. The joy in both Mr and Mrs Asmuths eyes as they joined hands was truly a sincere and loving sparkle. An expression of genuine love for being able to help a young person with her college expenses.
