Obituary

BEAVER DAM-Alan Matuszeski, age 89, formerly of Beaver Dam, passed away on Saturday, March 30, 2019. He was born on November 2, 1929 to John and Josephine (Mann) Matuszeski and grew up on a farm near Randolph. Al was working at Metalfab when he met the love of his life, Madeline Farrell, a fifth grade teacher at the old Wilson School. His nickname in the National Guard was “Matty”, and her nickname was “Maddy”, so some of his friends started calling her Madge. They married on Aug. 15, 1959. Al was an outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting, and forestry. He was a longtime member of the Juneau Rod and Gun Club. Whether it was plumbing, electrical, roofing, ceramic tile, remodeling, refinishing, or old tractors, Al could fix or build just about anything. He measured things to within a sixteenth or thirty-second of an inch and was extremely patient and methodical in all he did. He and Madge enjoyed wine making, gardening, and playing cards. He played an excellent game of euchre and sheepshead. Al didn’t do well after Madge passed away in July 2017. He once commented that now he was “paddling his own canoe.” Unfortunately, he spent some time going in circles. Thank you to neighbors and friends Jim and Joan Raether, Jim and Cheryl Koepsell, and Marty Weiss for their assistance and concern. Al’s quiet and gentle nature was at extreme odds with some of the personality changes experienced at the start of his Alzheimer’s journey. The family would like to thank the staff at Sienna Meadows in Oregon, and the staff at Heartland Hospice for their patience, compassion and care. Alan is survived by daughters Ari and Noreen; and beloved granddaughter, Clarissa. It is a blessing to have Al and Madge together again and she is surely back at the bow of the canoe. A private family service will be held. Gunderson Oregon Funeral & Cremation Care 1150 Park Street 608-835-3515

Al was such a good guy! On several occasions, my husband & I had the privilege of being in both his and Madge's company. Though he was a quiet man, he let his actions speak for him. However, he did involve himself with his township board and would share with us some of the important issues that were under consideration. When I think of him, I think of a man with integrity. May he find eternal happiness alongside his beloved Madge in the after life.

Dear Family and Friends, None of you will know me but I know Ari-Asha Castalia and her partner Dr. Leslie Waite in the San Francisco Bay Area. Ari-Asha is one of my best friends and office mate. I have watched her from afar lovingly send well wishes, and phone conversations (to her dad) and she would read bible verses (to her mom) over these last years. It's been humbling to watch how someone could grieve from afar as dementia took both of her parents. Noreen and Clarissa, I know you have done so much. Though you don't know me I keep you in my thoughts now and I know that you must have waves of grief and likely will for a long time. Those of us who move away grapple with the fact that we leave families, many aging to be cared for by other family members, it's a struggle. I have always felt close to this family as the south where I grew up is not too unlike Beaver Valley I sense, and my daughter's grandparents and aunts live scattered across IL and WI. I hope that friends will surround you and make this time a bit easier! Be well and sending love and prayers. Bridget Bertrand
