Obituary

MADISON - Mary Caulfield passed away on Saturday, April 19, 2025. She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel.

Mary was one of the first women to earn a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry at the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn (now part of NYU), where both she and Dan attended.

She was involved in her neighborhood association and was active in the community. Mary was proud of her activity in the early Franklin Elementary playground, the South Side Community Center and being part of the Italian Club of Madison. She was instrumental in getting the state to donate and build a neighborhood park.

Mary was a Master Gardner. She was part of the local gardening club and had a keen interest in Ikebana. She could name every plant and tree in her yard and neighborhood and loved to share her knowledge.  She was an amazing cook, loved traveling, being outdoors and going to the opera.

Mary and Dan opened their home and hearts to many and there was always a place to stay and enjoy a home cooked meal. They shared many years with a close group of friends gathering every Sunday for breakfast to laugh and enjoy life.

She will be missed greatly by her family and many friends both internationally and at home. She is survived by her two sons, Daniel (Susan) and David (Kathy).

Graveside services will be held at ROSELAWN MEMORIAL PARK, 401 Femrite Drive, Monona, at 12 p.m. on Friday, June 13, 2025. A celebration of her life will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, following the service.

Our heartfelt condolences on the passing of Mary, a truly uplifting, strong, kind & interesting lady. Mary was my Mum’s (Margherita ‘Rita’ Ghero, nee Salussolia) first cousin, with both having parental roots in Alice Castello in Northern Italy. Back in the 1950s my Mum spent 6 months living with Mary in New York, a period she always recalled very fondly. Although separated by ‘The Pond’ with us in England, we always maintained regular contact, something I was determined to continue after my Mum’s sudden passing last June. I’m so pleased I had one last phone call just weeks before Mary’s passing. Whilst this is a very sad time for Danny (Sue) & David (Kathy), and all of us who loved Mary, we must all take comfort that she passed peacefully, led an amazing, full life, and is now reunited with her beloved Dan (my Godfather). We will be paying tribute here in Norfolk, England on 13th June (coincidentally the 7th anniversary of my Dad’s passing and the day after my Mum’s first anniversary). I’m attaching photos of Mary with my Dad (Stephen) & Dan with my Mum taken during a visit to England around 2000. Suzie & Ian Levett

Recently I have been digitizing my scrapbooks and reached 1978. Mary was amazing as an organizer and promoter of our school playground at Franklin. We shared many ideas, a lot of work, and so many smiles and laughter. It was a remarkable experience for all of us, and brought a lot of joy to kids in years to come. I am sorry to learn that she is no longer a part of our community. My belated condolences to your family. If anyone knew how to celebrate life, it was your mother!
