On a visit to Washington Gladys shared so many funny stories about her life and marriage to Glenn. She had such a funny sense of humor. My Mom, Lois and her shared the story about Gladys living In Wisconsin. Grandma Nelson had became sick and was sent to the sanatorium. Mom had to stay home from school and take care of the younger kids, Gladys decided to come back to South Dakota to help out. Glenn sent Gladys a letter and told her, “It was now or never” if she wanted him. We have had many laughs over so many stories such as this. She will be greatly missed ❤️

I have such fond memories of her and Glenn from when I was little, and well into my teen years. There is an epic photo at my parent’s house of blondE little Brian, with Brentt and Alisa, slowly working up to a full-on mudball fight in their creek, over the buildup of what seemed like hours. We grew up playing, exploring, and hunting at their place every year. I’ll never forget memories of my Grandpa Walt, Uncle Bob and Aunt Sandy, my brother, sister, and Dad all crammed into that tiny old “cabin” on opening day of deer season. There was always a fine supper after the deer were cleaned and packed up, three generations at the table, tied to the land, and to each other. She seemed to put anything and everything you could think of in jello. Apples?!? Sweet tasting sure, but a little crunchy for jello. Then one year, celery in jello, iN JELLO!!!!! That silly story makes me think of all the time we played, explored, and learned in their little piece of Heaven on Earth. I think I found my love of nature there in those formative years. I’m remembering how much her/her loving home/that adventure-filled farm are a huge part of my childhood. My office door at work was closed for much of the day after hearing the news, tears of fond remembrance and sadness at her passing streaked my cheeks. Great-Aunt Gladys and my Grandma Lucille, those two amazing, funny, and kind Nelson women from South Dakota that made those memories possible and shaped me into who I am today. I am forever grateful to have had Gladys in my life.

Some of the fondest memories I have of Aunt Gladys were the times when the family all got together for the 4th of July family reunions in Aberdeen, SD. Gladys and family would travel from Wisconsin to South Dakota and spend a few days with family from all parts of the country. Since her birthday was July 1st we tried to have a birthday celebration at the same time. We miss the get togethers in Aberdeen and will miss Gladys. She had this special drink she made from Apple Cider Vinegar which kept her going. She shared it with me but I can't find the recipe now. Condolences for the Gullickson family.
