Ronald R. Moore

Mount Horeb - Ronald R. Moore, age 80, of Mount Horeb, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 5, 2024, at home. He was born on April 12, 1944, in Madison, the son of Robert Earl and Elsie (Scheidegger) Moore.

Ron graduated from Verona High School in 1962. He worked at the Service Station in Mount Vernon, which was owned by his brother-in-law, Harland Erfurth, during his senior year of high school on weekends and the first few years after graduation. In 1966, Ron started working at UW-Madison as a custodian on several different shifts and in many different buildings. During those years, he made many friends at what he liked to call the “World Class University.” He retired from the UW in July of 2000. After retirement, he volunteered at UW Hospital from 2006-2018.

Ron enjoyed snowmobiling for many years and was treasurer of the Mount Vernon Valley Snowmobile Club some of that time. He was a Badgers and Packers fan and enjoyed auto racing, especially NASCAR and Indy car. Ron went deer hunting starting in the early ‘60s with his father, brother-in-law, brother and eventually his nephews. He took the trip of a lifetime to Hawaii, mainly to see Pearl Harbor. He visited the USS Arizona Memorial and briefly toured the USS Missouri Battleship which was also in Pearl Harbor when Japan signed the surrender papers in 1945. Ron was baptized and confirmed at Zwingli United Church of Christ, Mt. Vernon, and more recently attended New Hope Evangelical Free Church in Mount Horeb.

Ron is survived by his sister, Nona (Harland) Erfurth; brother, Richard (Roxie) Moore; three nieces, Kate Compton, May McKinney and Nicole (Shane) Helland; three nephews, Jay (Diana) Erfurth, Rob (Lori) Erfurth and Chris Moore; 11 great-nephews and great-nieces; and a host of friends.  

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his niece’s husband, Mitch Compton.

A funeral service will be held at Gunderson Camacho Mount Horeb Funeral and Cremation Care, 500 N. Eighth St., Mount Horeb, at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2024, with Pastor Matt Young presiding. Burial will be held at Mount Vernon Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2024, and also at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday.
