VERONA - James Dale “Jim” Schumann, 90, of Verona, Wis., passed away with family in attendance on January 14, 2026. He was born in a farmhouse in the Town of Berry on September 11, 1935. He was the fourth child of Edwin and Nettie Schumann and the last to be born at home. He walked 2.5 miles to grade school, and in the winter, he sometimes used his sled to get there faster. He graduated from Mazomanie High School in 1953 and on July 5, 1957, he married Viriginia Laures Anderson. In December 1957, he started his long career in sheet metal, not retiring until 1998. In 1970, they adopted their first child, Shannon (Schumann) Verbos and in 1974, they adopted their second child, Erin Schumann. After retirement from his sheet metal career, he worked for North Parrish Gardens, Brooklyn, Wis., until his second retirement in 2014 at the age of 79.
Jim was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Virginia (Anderson) Schumann; siblings, LaVern (Geraldine) Schumann, Shirley (Paul) Starczynski, and Nathalie (Bud) Bergum; brothers-in-law, Arlan (Joyce Prochnow) Anderson and Duane (Marcia) Anderson; sister-in-law, Jean Schumann; and parents, Edwin and Nettie Schumann.
He is survived by his two daughters, Shannon (Schumann) Verbos (Burt Tamminga) and Erin Schumann (Bryan Ponzio); siblings, Gloria (Mike) Mullvain and Eugene Schumann; many nieces and nephews, as well as numerous lifelong friends.
A funeral service will be held at St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church, 427 S. Main St., Verona, at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 27, 2026. Burial will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church Cemetery, Marxville. Visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the service on Tuesday.
