Ruth N. Steinhauer

MOUNT HOREB - Ruth Nellie (Amacher) Steinhauer, age 90, of Mount Horeb, died on Friday, July 17, 2020, at St. Mary’s Care Center in Madison. She was born on Jan. 7, 1930, to John and Bertha (Abegglen) Amacher. Ruth was married to Henry Steinhauer on March 18, 1947. They were married for 64 years. John 14:2-4. “In my Father’s house there are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going to prepare a place for you. I would not tell you this, if it were not so. And after I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to myself, so will be where I am. You know the way that leads to the place where I am going.” Ruth has many rooms in her father’s house. She was a daughter, sister, wife, mother-in-law, grandmother and great-grandmother. As a farmer, Ruth labored both in the fields and in the barn. She was a 4-H leader. A cornet, accordion and harmonica player. An expert at making Swiss Zupfe bread and Bratseli cookies. A Lay leader for the Mount Horeb United Methodist Church and Sunday School teacher. A fun-filled card player, Euchre and Jass was her game of choice. The farm was the place to be for potluck, raclette, and cards with grandma! Henry and Ruth farmed in the Town of Vermont and on the Steinhauer Homestead in Blue Mounds Township. Ruth sold insurance for Royal Neighbors and worked for Lands’ End in her retirement after farming. In 1987, Henry and Ruth founded Funny Farm Travel: they organized and guided tours to share the joys and treasures of one of the most beautiful countries in the world, Switzerland, the homeland of Ruth’s parents. Ruth loved her husband, her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, life on the farm and her Savior. The past few months, Ruth’s wish was to go home. She was at peace and welcomed her life’s passing. She is now home in her Father’s house of many mansions. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Henry; her parents, John, and Bertha Amacher; her brother, John A. Amacher and his wife, Carol; sisters, Leny M. Gibbon, and her husbands, Jim Graber and Aldro Gibbon, Anna Bertha Schweitzer and her husband, Fred and Suzy Amacher (infancy); brother-in-law, Franklin Gerke; and great-grandson, Asher A. Steinhauer. Ruth is survived by her six children, Duane (Rosann) Steinhauer, Mary (Heinz) Schmocker (Switzerland), Charles (Lorraine) Steinhauer, Susan (James) Brice, David (Dawneen) Steinhauer and Donald (Denise) Steinhauer; her brother, Samuel P. Amacher; sister, Linda E. Gerke; very special nephew, Rick Schweitzer; as well as many other nieces and nephews; 16 grandchildren, Benny Schmocker, Lisi Zuellig-Schmocker (Danny Schafer), Kathy (Christophe) Oberrauch-Schmocker – the Swiss grandchildren, Steven (Karli) Steinhauer, James Steinhauer, Joy (Aristotle) Esguerra, Anthony (Angela) Steinhauer, Timothy (Tiffany), Angela (Brian) Utter, Sherry (Craig) Czarnecki, Daniel (Mindy) Brice, Kristina (Michael) Maynard, John (Nuria) Steinhauer, Jeffrey (Jackie) Steinhauer, Joshua (Virginia) Steinhauer, and Justin Steinhauer; 23 1/2 great-grandchildren, Victoria, Madison, Carson Steinhauer, Leila and Anja Oberrauch (Swiss great-grandchildren), Lara May and Joshua Zuellig (Swiss great-grandchildren), Mia and Kara Brice, Henry and Allyson Steinhauer, Layna Steinhauer, Raphael, Lawrence, Sylvia and Isaac Esguerra, Elijah, Josiah and Ruth Steinhauer and another on the way, Dean and Amelia Czarnecki, and Alexander and Abigail Utter. A celebration of life will be held at RED MOUSE, 3738 County Road P, Cross Plains, from 12 noon until 3 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 8, 2021. A time of remembrance will start at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Lunch and music will be provided by the family.
