Obituary

Blanchardville / Mount Horeb - Deane Richard Haag, age 76, of Blanchardville, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2023, at his home. He was born to Richard and Edna (Post) Haag on May 21, 1947, in Madison, Wis. Due to the deaths of his parents when he was a young teen, he lived with different families in the Mount Horeb area. Living with the Slaney family, Deane learned to build fences. He graduated from Mount Horeb High School in 1965. After graduating, he built fences and worked at Coca Cola and Central Colony. Deane enlisted in the U.S. Army and was in Vietnam during the Vietnam Tet offensive in 1968. In 1970, Deane and Carolyn (Cook) met on the job at Central Colony. On Nov. 20, 1970, they were married at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Madison.

After Police training Deane worked as a police officer at UWPD for 6 years and then 27 years at Shorewood Hills. After working the midnight shift, he would spend the day fencing in the Mount Horeb area, he did this while living in Lodi and eventually in Mount Horeb. Carolyn and Deane would wave as they passed each other. Deane loved building fences and eventually started his own business, DRH Fencing. On their drives later in life he would proudly point out his fences and usually have a story to go with them. Due to health problems, he quit fencing, but his business lives on. Deane loved his family, home, talking to everyone and a good cup of coffee.

Deane is survived by his wife of 53 years, Carolyn; daughters, Heather (Billy) Meckley, Holly Brickner, Hillary (Vince) Spruill and Haley (Ray) Hellenbrand; grandchildren, Lyndsey Meckley, Billy Deane Meckley, Ashley (Cody) Pharo, Isaac Brickner, Kallie Hellenbrand, and Mason Hellenbrand; great-granddaughter, Wynter Meckley; two great-grandsons on the way; brothers, Jerry Haag and Dominic Haag; sister, Jean (Bob) Lee; sisters-in-law, Tykie (Don) Wescott and Barb (Bob Johnson) Cook; many nieces and nephews, cousins, and a world of friends. I shared a lot of night shifts and bad coffee with Deane in all kinds of conditions and I’m damn glad I had the opportunity to do so. He was a joy to be around always, a good cop and an even better man to have as backup. He loved a good prank and God knows there were plenty played both by him and on him. A sick sense of humor kept us all on the right side of sanity when times were trying. Losing my dear friends and colleagues in law enforcement day by day and week by week is crushing but I will continue to treasure the memories I have of each and every one of them. Thanks to Carolyn and the girls for sharing this big lovable lug with us.

All those memories of second and third-shift coffee at 3310 University Ave. when I was a rookie-cop in the 80’s. I was the lone female officer on nights those early years 👮🏻 and you were always helpful and encouraging. All the shared calls - many of which made for great stories and memories! All the times you showed up at UWPD whenever there was (unannounced) free food - somehow, you had a sixth sense!?😅 And I can’t forget your excellent build of our stalls and tack room at Hope Hill Farm in Cottage Grove - such quality workmanship! You are one-of-a-kind and I will miss you on this Earth, Deane! 😢 See you in the next, best place . . .

Carolyn, I am so sorry to learn that you and your family have lost Deane. I remember hearing you talk of him often during the years and you and I worked together. Wishing you and your family grace and peace as you grieve.

I will always remember Deane for his independent streak. It somewhat like herding cats. But he did his job as a police officer with honor. Our residents liked him as he took their various reports. He was a hit on the night shift taking his breaks at a convenience store in Shorewood Hills with our UWPD and MPD partners. He also enjoyed the donuts there! Godspeed, Ofc.
