Obituary
MOUNT HOREB - Hazel Marie (Eckel) Gladem, age 94, of Mount Horeb, gained her heavenly wings on July 21, 2022, peacefully at Agrace HospiceCare in Fitchburg.
Hazel was born to Henry and Eva (Wirth) Eckel on April 26, 1928, in Blue Mounds. She attended elementary school in Blue Mounds and high school in Mount Horeb, graduating in 1946. She worked after high school at Stauffer Cheese in Blue Mounds. She married Glenn Gladem on June 6, 1948, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Mount Horeb. They farmed in German Valley and Springdale, then moved to Mount Horeb where she worked for the Mount Horeb Animal Hospital until her retirement.
Hazel’s biggest pride and joy was when they became foster parents to four children, Charles, Linda, David and Toni Jones, who they adopted. She gave all her love, guidance and protected them, more than any mother could.
Hazel enjoyed needlework, ceramics, crossword puzzles, putting puzzles together and reading. What she loved most was taking care of her grandchildren.
Hazel is survived by her children, Charles (Carol) Jones of Blue Mounds, David (Jill) Jones of Boulder Junction and Toni (David) Turnquist of Edgerton; eight grandchildren, Steve (Shawn) Erbe of Mount Horeb, Robert (Kathy) Hendrickson of Stone Lake, Melissa (Keith) Legler of Blanchardville, Jodi (Jason) Rowley of Rosendale, Holly (Steve) Kellesvig of Mount Horeb, Jana (Stacey) Hurda of Edgerton, Sarah (Jeff) Jacobson of Mount Horeb and Greg (Traci) Jones of Mount Horeb; 24 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter and two great-great-grandsons in waiting. She is further survived by a sister-in-law, Beverly Eckel of Mount Horeb; and nephew, Scott (Christine) Eckel of Madison.
Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn; parents, Henry and Eva Eckel; daughter, Linda Hendrickson; grandson, Charles (Wade) Jones; daughter-in-law, Nadine Jones; sister, Elaine Reilly; brother, Henry Eckel Jr.; niece, Sharon Moschkau; nephew, Steve Eckel; mother-in-law, Myrtle (Gladem) Adney; sister-in-law, Virginia Gerke; and sister-in-law, Delores (Lawrence) Anderson.
A funeral service will be held at Springdale Lutheran Church, 2752 Town Hall Road, Mount Horeb, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 30, 2022, with Vicar Jim Ranney presiding, followed by a luncheon. Visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Hazel’s honor to Springdale Lutheran Church in Mount Horeb, or Agrace HospiceCare in Fitchburg.
Hazel’s family would like to acknowledge the wonderful care she received for the past two years at home; caregivers Sarah, Kristen, Lisa, Aly, Melissa, Jodie, Abbi and Cassie. Also, a big Thank You to the nurses of Agrace and the Beehive.
