Obituary

MT. HOREB-Catherine (Cate) Gimse-Owen, age 70, died peacefully with her husband by her side on December 14, 2018 at UW Hospital after a long illness. She is survived by her husband, Robert W. Owen, her two sons, Larry and Shawn Owen, and her two sisters, Margaret Verdict and Barbara DeJesus. Cate was born on April 7, 1948 in Willmar, Minnesota, the daughter of the late Ernest and June (Carlson) Gimse. An accomplished musician, she wrote and arranged music, was a church organist/pianist, singer, and educator, always passing along her love for music. She accompanied countless musicians and performed in many ensembles throughout her life, including the Play of Daniel and Saint Nicolas in Milwaukee. She had a love for literature and graduated Cum Laude from UW Oshkosh with a Master’s in English Literature. She enjoyed writing and went on to research and write programs for the National Sheriff’s Association, Olbrich Botanical Gardens, the State of Wisconsin and non-profit organizations through southwest Wisconsin. A master gardener, she loved nature, being outside, and enjoyed planning, planting, and creating lush landscapes in her yard with friends and family. She volunteered at Olbrich Botanical Gardens and created many lasting friendships there. Cate was naturally inquisitive and creative, whether it be weaving rugs, creating handmade cards, or learning something new, she was always active and engaging. As a devoted Mother, she cared deeply about her family and supported them without restraint. She loved meeting new people and talking to friends, and always had time to help anyone who reached out. Cate loved all animals and had a special place in her heart for her dogs. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all that knew her. A funeral service will be held at WEST BLUE MOUNDS LUTHERAN CHURCH, 2962 Church Street, Blue Mounds, on Friday, December 28, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Nicole Espe presiding. Burial will be held at Nannestad Cemetery in Pennock, Minnesota, at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Iowa County Humane Society. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com. I donated to the Iowa County Humane Society in Cate's name. There's a donor that is matching donations, so it will double!! I think she would be tickled about that!

I got to know Cate over the last two years. What a sweet spirit. So down to earth and with a great sense of humor.
