Obituary

MOUNT HOREB - Jenny Leah Elmer, age 89, of Mount Horeb, passed away on Thursday, June 25, 2026, surrounded by her family. She was born on August 4, 1936, in Monroe, the daughter of Harvey and Gladys (Freitag) Elmer.


Jenny is survived by her daughters, Heather (Paul) Kohlwey and Alicia (Marty) Szekeres; grandchildren, Anna Jenny Szekeres and Cole Szekeres; sisters, Marianne Lederman and Dawn Brager; beloved cat, Scooter; and many nieces, nephews and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Harvey Earle Elmer Jr.; sister, Joy Thurston; brothers-in-law, LaVerne Lederman, Mike Thurston and Phil Brager; and the father of her children, Merlin Casey.

I had the sincere pleasure of working with Jenny at the Cave of the Mounds. She is one of the most wonderful people in the world! Always smiliing and always taking care of those around her. She was truly dedicated to everything she did. She will be greatly missed and we send our thoughts and prayers to all her family and friends.

I had the honor of getting to know Jenny through school. She would substitute teach. Through subbing, she met my children. She was always so thoughtful. Every time I saw her she would ask about my kids and my husband (she gave him piano lessons when he was little). We would talk about flowers and farms. She always had a smile and a bit of knowledge to share. I hadn’t seen Jenny in a long time since she wasn’t subbing anymore. Just a few weeks ago I was at a town board meeting and there was Jenny. We chatted briefly and of course she asked about my kids. She met them at least 20 plus years ago. I will always think fondly of my interactions with Jenny. Sending sympathy to her entire family. So very sorry to hear about Jenny. She was such a wonderful person. Thoughtful, caring, independent. It always amazed me, her stories of all the activities she kept up with. So many memories. The piano lessons where she put up with me not practicing like I should. Rescuing the flower pot from the top of the piano during my too enthusiastic rendition of Bridge Over Troubled Water at a recital. :) Throughout the years, she never missed sending a nice letter at Christmas to keep in touch and let me know how she was doing. Jenny was a great influence in my life and so many others. Heather, Alicia, my deepest condolences to you and your families.
