Obituary
Hazel Kurtz, 99, died peacefully April 3, 2019. She was predeceased by her husband of 68 years, Willis Kurtz; and her son James. She is survived by daughters Roberta Kurtz, of Verona, WI, Janet (Pete) DeSario of Palm City, FL, Karen Kurtz (Paul Benedetto) of Guelph, Ontario; five grandchildren, John (Debra) DeSario, Paul (Mary) DeSario, David (Elaine) DeSario, Bryan (Shephali) Gaier and Karla (Jared) Beasley; and nine great-grandchildren.
Hazel was the youngest daughter of Laura (Longanecker) Horst and Jonas Horst of Columbiana, OH. She had ten siblings, all deceased.
Hazel resided in Hartville OH for over 60 years. The last decade she lived near Verona WI, cared for by daughter Roberta and dear friend, Peg Schmidt. Though many of Hazel’s memories faded, she stayed rooted in her family and long-time friends.
Hazel loved teaching sixth grade for 20 years in the Springfield school system. She was an avid gardener, and she enjoyed singing, playing piano, and writing witty poems, which often ended up in birthday cards. Nothing pleased her more than hosting dinners and campfires for family and friends.
Hazel was an active member in the Hartville Church of the Brethren and later in East Nimishillen Church of the Brethren. Her steadfast faith in God was lived out in her actions. She saw the innate goodness in everyone, and she had a positive outlook on life, even in difficult times. Hazel was dearly loved by all.
The Kurtz family wishes to thank Azura Memory Care, Stoughton, WI, staff for many years of affectionate, fine care for Hazel. Also, appreciation is extended to Agrace HospiceCare for their excellent and compassionate care when it was needed this last year. A memorial service celebrating Hazel’s life is planned for July 20, 10:30 a.m. at the E. Nimishillen Church. Final resting place: Mount Peace Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the East Nimishillen Church of the Brethren or Agrace Hospice ( www.agrace.org ). Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.
