Obituary
OREGON- Katharine M. “Kathy” Arling, age 81, passed away peacefully in her home, on her birthday, July 9, 2018, after a battle with COPD which she fought with dignity and courage. Kathy will be missed for so many, many things. Among them, her compassion for others proven by her selfless volunteering, the times spent with her friends playing bridge and the many trips spent together and unending love and adoration for her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Kathy grew up in Madison and attended Madison West High School, class of 1955. She enjoyed the years spent planning the reunions for her classmates and was always full of spirit. Some of Kathy's favorite yearly trips included Mexico, Hilton Head Island and Northern Wisconsin; always including many friends on these excursions. She most enjoyed tending to her garden, getting lost in a good book and finding that special trinket to decorate her home with. She was a true lover of all animals and will be dearly missed by her two dogs, Jackson and Gracie.
Kathy is survived by her husband of 49 years, Gary, whom she met working at the Primate Lab and who was her truest and best friend in life. Gary and Kathy did everything together, from making a loving home for their family to traveling the world. Her most favorite time was in Paris (twice) together. At the time of her retirement she was department secretary in charge of supervising all non-academic staff at the U.W. Department of Psychology. Kathy is survived by her husband, Gary; son, Daniel "Danny" Schwoegler (Lynne Marsom) and Ric (Lisa) Arling; grandchildren, Jillaine (Kraig) Squires, Ryan (Amanda) Schwoegler, Amy Schwoegler and Anthony Schwoegler; great-grandchildren Cody and Josephine Squires, Cameryn Schwoegler, and Connor Parr. Other grandchildren include, Matt (Parr), and Jessica (Murphy). She is further survived by her brother, Fred (Anne) Lowe of Hudson. She was preceded in death by her son, Anthony; daughter, Mona; mother, Margaret; father, Arthur; and brother, Johnny.
A memorial gathering will be held at GUNDERSON OREGON FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 1150 S. Park St, Oregon, at 11:30 a.m., on Saturday, July 14, 2018, with a luncheon to follow. I knew Kathy through the St. Mary's Hospital Auxiliary. She gave many hours to that organization, always cheerful and caring. May she rest in peace.

Luz Maria & I enjoyed the fun times in Mexico, especially cruising with Marsha and Kathy riding in the back of the pick up truck. A brave lass! She was lovely inside & out.

My sweet neighbor, I loved going over to play with their dogs and Kathy used to make me peanut butter crackers all the time when I was younger. Kathy and Gary and are like another set of grandparents to me. So grateful Kathy got to meet my son before she left. God bless Kathy and her family

Kathy and Gary have been our neighbors and friends for over 3 decades. We were just married when we moved in and they have watched our children grow up and have celebrated all the milestones with us. This picture is Gary and Kathy at our daughter's wedding 8 years ago. Kathy was always working in the yard and we enjoyed many conversations, she was always sweet and interested in what the kids were doing. I know our kids remember visits to Kathy's house and the treats she would give them. We will miss her sunny disposition and her kindness, She was a wonderful woman and will not be forgotten. Love you and God Bless you Kathy! Gary we are here for anything you need, please call on us. Joe and Amy Carril and family
