Obituary

EVANSVILLE/OREGON-Larry Walford, age 53, passed away unexpectedly in his home on Wednesday, July 4, 2018. He was born on May 25, 1965, at Stoughton Hospital to Donald and Joyce Walford. Larry married the love of his life and best friend, Sheila Gaffney, in February of 1989. The couple have two children, Bradley (Danielle) Gaffney and Brittney (Nikkolis) Walford. He was “Papa” to his granddaughter, Sophie, and was looking forward to the birth of another granddaughter in October. Larry’s siblings include, Rich (Paula) Walford, Dennis (Nancy) Bong, David (Robin) Bong, David (Karen) Walford, and Sue (Bucky) Patterson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Joyce Walford; his brother, Bobby Bong; and sister, Sandy Lampe. Larry had a special spot in his heart for his father and mother-in-law, Richard and Georgia Gaffney, and his many nieces and nephews. Larry began his working years at his father’s gas station in Oregon. He went on to spend several decades in car sales and finance. Larry spent his last years working at Latitude Corp., where he was recently promoted to Assembly Lead. Larry was a devoted family man. He took great pride in his family, their accomplishments and the close relationships they maintained. Larry is remembered for being a genuine, understanding and a down-to-earth guy, who enjoyed the simple things. Loyalty and respect are other attributes that were very important to Larry, and a virtue that he will be remembered for. Larry had a comforting presence. He remained calm and stoic in the hardest of situations and always seemed to know what to do. Larry was driven in his life by the urge to do what was right. He was a talented musician with a great passion for making music. Larry had a strong bond with his music family and felt privileged each and every time he was asked to play with such a broad spectrum of musicians. He kept things simple and true when he played. He prided himself on a clean sound in his music. Larry loved the music of Chet Atkins, Johnny Cash and Marty Stewart. Larry was very patriotic and full of pride for his country and service men. He enjoyed hunting, camping, motorcycles, and being able to just take a minute to relax and enjoy his surroundings. I saw Larry play with Blue Steel about 4 years ago in Cottage Grove and was impressed by his talent. One excellent guitarist! I still to this day remember way back when he was 2 or 3 at Grandma Walford's on Nesbitt Road for for a holiday gathering. We wrestled on the floor for an hour or two until Uncle Don told us to knock it off. I'm guessing now that we were interrupting their Dirty Clubs or Euchre game. I am so sorry for your loss. R.I.P. Sheila and family. I am so sorry to hear about Larry. I hadn't seen him in a long time, but I will always remember his great smile. I remember going to Don's Transport and seeing him there when he was a little kid too. Larry was a sincere ,genuine guy who didn't have a mean bone in his body. Sincerely Jim Snow.
