We enjoyed John a lot as a great friend and brother-in-law. We enjoyed our numerous visits for golf games and biking. John and I had a good time biking to Mount Horeb in 1982. We stopped for breakfast and looked like we knew everybody in town. Some 20 people had breakfast with us and told stories about John and I.
When I came to Madison in 1963, John became a mentor and guide for me as he knew many people from all walks of life. That really helped me as the Dane County Planner and a newcomer. John was a natural athlete and excelled in everything sport he was engaged in. He was a top basket ballplayer on UW Varsity Team and was recognized as such in several events. John was a very kind man with unbound generosity. He was a model citizen and personified the best in all humans.
We will miss you John

For an excited (and excitable) young tennis player in the 70s it was always comforting to know that John was always willing to play at the West High tennis courts. He was patient and generous and positive. A warm engaging personality. I didn't know he served in WW2, but knew he was a basketball star, and I was West High teammates with his son, Joe. My sympathies to Joe and the Schwartz family. Your father lived a long and rich life.

Fred,
I'm sorry to hear of your father's passing. I have played music for the folks at Oakwood Tabor Oaks several times and maybe had the chance to connect with John through music there. My condolences to you and your family.
