Obituary

MADISON - Barbara Ann "Barb" (Matteson) Lynch, the beloved matriarch of the Matteson-Lynch clan, began her eternal rest on February 14, 2025. Born on August 31, 1948, in Madison, Barb's greatest joy was her family, both those by blood and those by bond.

Except for a brief stay in Rhode Island when she was young, Barb spent her life on the east side of Madison with her five siblings. She graduated from Madison East in 1966. In December 1968 Barb gave birth to Scott Alan. Several years later Paul David joined the family in January 1975. She met the love of her life, Jerry, and they began a lifelong relationship in 1977. In the early 80s Barb took the brave step of going to school at MATC and got a degree that allowed her to begin her employment at St. Mary's Hospital in the print shop/mailroom. Barb was particularly proud of her 33-year career of providing support to the staff of St. Mary's and continued to volunteer there after her retirement.

Barb regularly organized outings and gatherings to bring her circle together in the celebration of holidays and milestones including family birthdays and lefse making. She prided herself in treating her family with baked goods and candies and was legendary for her fudge and meatballs. Barb was known for her generosity supporting her family, especially her granddaughters, and community such as donations to local elementary schools. When she wasn't supporting family, Barb spent her time reading, shopping for a good deal and regularly meeting with her fellow '66ers for lunch.

Barb was preceded in death by her parents, Leon and Juanita; her partner's parents, John and Borghild; brothers, Charles and Mark; sisters-in-law, Marjanne (Mike) and Yoshie (David); and daughter-in-law, Stacy (Scott). She is survived by her partner of almost 50 years, Jerry; sons, Scott (Michelle) and Paul (Merranda); granddaughters, Megan (Ryan) and Marin (Henry); great-grandson, Thomas; great-granddaughter, Dorothy; brothers, Mike and David; sister, Pat; sisters-in-law, Nora (Charles) and Joni (Mark); best friend of 60 years, Gail; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A celebration of life will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. on Saturday, March 1, 2025. A remembrance meal will follow at the funeral home.

I worked at St Mary’s for many years and always enjoyed every interaction with Barb. She always met me with a smile and exhibited incredible patience when I (a simple nurse) needed her to explain a better way of printing or binding a project piece. We would always hug when she presented the final work, because we were both so happy with it! She worked hard, was good at her job and provided key services to the operations at St Mary’s. My deepest sympathies to her beloved family. ~Nancy Graham
