September 03, 1950 - May 03, 2018
Obituary
CHICAGO, ILL./MADISON-Mary Margaret Roberts-Powell, age 67, of Madison, departed this life on Thursday, May 3, 2018, after a long and courageous battle with metastatic breast cancer. She was born on Sept. 3, 1950, in Bridgeport, Ill., the daughter of Marshall and Mary (Kamarauskas) Roberts. Mary was one of those rare people who lovingly enjoyed and reveled in the small things in life – walking her “grand dogs,” Keely and Enzo, gardening, and spending time with friends and family. She was a tireless supporter of, and advocate for, breast cancer research, and did everything she could to raise awareness about metastatic breast cancer. Mary is survived by her husband, Jess Powell; sons, Nick (Natalie) Schimick of Richmond, Va. and Tim Schimick of Madison; granddaughters, Remy and Margaux Schimick; brothers, James and Timothy Roberts; sister, Marsha Spaniel; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Marshall and Mary Roberts; and her brother, John Roberts. A Celebration of Mary’s spectacularly lived life will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., on Wednesday, May 9, 2018. In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial donations to www.metavivor.org or www.gildasclubmadison.org.

Mary and I were teenagers growing up in Bridgeport. She was beautiful, goofy and fun to be with. She had every color "stretch" pants and Angola sweater to match. We lost contact years ago but I often wondered how she was. So sorry to hear about her illness. RIP Mary

In love and light Mary lived and so she should be honored. A wonderful person and beautiful soul. She was sweet and tough as nails. Thank you Mary, for all you did for us!

To Mary's family - I've only known Mary a few years through our Harbor Athletic Club water exercise classes. She always put such a positive spin on the day, no matter how she was feeling. And she was very open and frank about dealing with breast cancer which I think all her water-pals appreciated. She remarked on a scarf I was wearing just after Christmas this year. When she found out that I had knit it, she was so complimentary that I decided she should have one too. I'm so glad I was able to stop by her home to give it to her, probably in late January. I hope it lifted her spirit when she wore it and knew that she was in my thoughts with every stitch. The photo you chose was so lovely and that is how I will remember her.
