MCFARLAND-Robert Peter Caspersen, age 99, of McFarland, passed away on Monday, Feb. 12, 2018, at Waunakee Manor. He was born on Dec. 9, 1918, in Madison, the son of Peter and Clara (Flugum) Caspersen. Robert was a 1936 graduate of Madison High School and a graduate of UW-Madison. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1944 to 1946. Robert was united in marriage to Zelma Peck on August 26, 1939. He was the owner and operator of Caspersen Machining for 65 years, and a member of American Legion Post No. 534 in McFarland and Bethel Lutheran Church. Robert is survived by his son, Michael Caspersen; grandsons, Robert (Jenny) Caspersen, Michael Caspersen (special friend, Amy) and Jack Caspersen; granddaughters, Mary (Pat) Toner and Amanda LoCascio; great-grandchildren, Lily, Danny, Kyan and Aleyna; sister-in-law, Dorothy Sisto; and many nieces, nephews and close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Zelma; son, Robert "Butch" Caspersen; daughter, Marguerite Caspersen: sister, Marguerite Parker; and many brothers and sisters-in-law. Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at noon on Monday, Feb. 19, 2018. Burial will be held at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Monday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family of Robert to be designated at a later date. Robert will always be remembered as a kind, generous and loyal man who was dedicated to his family and friends. If anyone was in need, he was always there to help. He always kept people entertained with stories of his life. Robert will be dearly missed by all who knew him, as he was truly one of a kind. The family would like to give a special “thank you” to the "Peck" girls for keeping him filled with homemade treats in life, especially during his last weeks, and to the staff at Waunakee Manor for the care that they gave to Bob. There are too many to name but know that we thank you all. In addition, there are so many people who want to talk about Bob with their memories and stories as he had numerous family and friends in his 99 years of life. A much larger celebration will be held in his honor in May. The official date will follow. It will be how he always celebrated life, with food, laughter and friends. Thank you Papa for all that you did for us. From video taping all our hockey games, showing me on to change a timing belt on my supra or being there anytime we needed you. God got a great machinist. RIP I hope Nana is waiting there for you with dinner ready.

Bob was a real mentor for me, both as a brilliant machinist and a decent human being. A prime specimen from what is called the Greatest Generation. Kind thoughts go out to his family.

Mike and Family. So sorry to read about the loss of this great man, your father. Bob meant the world to all of Butch's friends. His and your mothers house was always open to us guys who hung around Butch. I will miss the funeral Monday as I will be visiting our friend Don Cavanaugh. Our thoughts and prayers will be with you and family as you face this loss.
