SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF.-Lonnie W. Chui, age 78, of San Francisco, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 14, 2017, at UW Hospital. She was born on Jan. 3, 1939, in San Francisco, Calif, the daughter of Bak Yuen and May (Lee) Wong. Lonnie was a second and third grade teacher at Spring Valley Elementary School. She was very independent and loved world travel. With her friends, she visited each of the seven continents. Lonnie loved walking with her friends and going to the opera and the theater. She especially cherished the vacations she took with her family. Lonnie is survived by her daughter, Michelle (Thad Schumacher) Chui; son, Steve (Clarissa) Chui; six grandchildren, Madison Schumacher, Evan Schumacher, Zachary Schumacher, Kendall Schumacher, Ryan Chui, and Curtis Chui; and sister, Susan (Bock) Loo. She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Robert W. Chui. A Celebration of Life will be held at 12 noon on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2017 at GRAND PLACE RESTAURANT, 359 Grand Avenue, South San Francisco. There will be an open mike so please come with stories to read or have read for you. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Golden Gate Senior Services, http://ggsenior.org/castro.html.

Saddened by the sudden loss - so near Christmas too, when it’s the time I write yearly to you, Auntie Lonnie. You have always been an encourager to me throughout and I will miss you dearly.

My heart goes out to the Chui family and friends of Lonnie.
I worked along with Lonnie for a couple of decades. When I was teaching a bilingual first grade class, I was required to take extra college classes to keep my position. Some were good, some were quite boring.
One year after school I was dragging my feet to a mundane class whining, "but I don't wanna go to class. . . ." Lonnie came down with chocolate and bribed me to go. That semester she brought me chocolate before each class (then pushed me out the door!).
Lonnie always had the respect of the children, even when they were naughty. Despite her small stature, she would have kids taller than her following her directions because they trusted her.
Lonnie had good humor and good common sense. She will be missed by all who knew her. With Love, from Laura C.S.

It was surely a very shocking news to us to know that you have departed so suddenly. You will be missed by everyone who loved you. I am sure it will be a joyful reunion with Uncle Bob, my father and his sister too. Till we meet again one day. Rest well Auntie Lonnie.

Michelle and Steven, we are very saddened to hear of the loss of your mom, Auntie Lonnie. I remember our family ski trips to Lake Tahoe with fondness, and now that we are parents ourselves, with a bit of awe as well. What dedication, patience and generosity our parents had for us. I always remember Uncle Bob's sense of humor and his smile, for he always had a smile for us. And when I think of your mom, Auntie Lonnie, I will always remember her warm, supporting and calming nature. She was always very loving.
