MADISON-James R. Hanaway, age 86, of Madison, passed away on Friday, Dec. 8, 2017, in Madison. He was born on Aug. 26, 1931, the son of John and Agnes (Flathley) Hanaway. James is survived by his wife, Joann Hanaway; sons, John (Laura) Hanaway and Scott Hanaway; daughters, Julie (James) Ott, Romni Pullen and Kari (Steven) Gilbertson-Schaefer; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Don Hanaway. Per James wishes no funeral services will be held. The family would like to give special thanks to Agrace HospiceCare for the continued care and support given to James. “Do it the right way, the wrong way, or the Hanaway!”

I worked with Jim for many years at American. It was a pleasure to know him. He was certainly the "idea" man and definitely did it the "Hanaway." So sorry to hear of your loss.

I was one of many foster children that lived with Jo and Jim, long ago. During that very tumultuous time in my life they were the only stability I would know for many years. Though I remember Jim's many "Yes, dear"s to Jo and his general good humor, what I always instantly think of when I think of him is him smiling and saying "Kill 'em with kindness!" It still makes me laugh when I think of him! It means so much to me to have that memory.
He and Jo will always be a bright spot in the pain of those terrible years.
I wish there were more foster parents like they were.

I too was one of many foster children that had lived with Jim and Joann. I was 13 years old then and that was one of the hardest times of my life. Ill always remember Jim and Joann as good hearted, caring, loving people. Jim I believe was working at Steinhafels at the time and then working for the Baraboo Cow Pie Company. He had shiny white hair and always had a smile on his face. You will be missed but always remembered. Thanks for opening up your home to us children. With Love, Cristen

Jim and Jo were my foster parents for almost 2 years. I'm 52 yrs old now but I've never forgotten the love, stability and kindness they gave me as well as numerous other troubled teenagers. Jim was the sweetest and most gentle person I've ever known. May he rest in peace.
