Richard T. Garrigan

MIDDLETON – Richard T. Garrigan, age 81, of Middleton, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 9, 2020, at the University of Wisconsin – Madison Hospital. He was born on March 4, 1938, in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Walter Garrigan and Priscilla (née Hill) Garrigan – who preceded him in death. Richard graduated from the Ohio State University (where he was an Alfred P. Sloan Scholar) with a Bachelor of Science degree (1961) and from the University of Wisconsin – Madison with Master of Science degree (1966) and with a Doctorate of Philosophy (1973). He also served in the Army (1955-1958). For many years, Richard was a Professor of Real Estate at the Kellstadt Graduate School of Business at DePaul University (Chicago, Illinois). He was also co-editor of The Handbook of Mortgage Banking: A Guide to the Secondary Mortgage Market and of Real Estate Investment Trusts: Structure, Analysis and Strategy; additionally, he authored (or co-authored) several research papers published in a variety of academic- and practitioner-oriented journals. He also consulted with and/or served on boards of several organizations, including: Bell Federal Bank, Federal Home Loan Bank Board, Federal National Mortgage Association, Guild Mortgage Investments and Real Estate Research Corporation. Richard enjoyed many interests. He was an avid reader with a strong interest in history, who also enjoyed long automobile trips and was a fan of both Badger and Buckeye football. Richard is survived by his son, Matthew O. (Brooke) Garrigan; and three grandson, Matthew B., Quinn and Graham. He also leaves behind his sister, Patricia Benz, of Chimacum, Wash.; and a niece and a nephew. Burial has been held at Forest Hill Cemetery in Madison, Wis.
