MADISON/MIDDLETON-Mary Michie Udall, age 95, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 26, 2017. She was born on Aug. 8, 1922 in Ripon, Wis., the daughter of Don and Frances (Oeder) Miller. Mary grew up along the south shore of Green Lake. She graduated from Ripon High School and also graduated from Ripon College earning a B.A. in Sociology in 1943. Mary then traveled to England and studied sculpture from the Center School of Art, London in 1952. She returned to Madison and earned her Master’s in Art Education from UW Madison in 1962. Mary’s professional accomplishments include, Director of the Rural Art Project thru the UW Extension , Art Researcher in Kenya, East Africa, exhibits at the Wright Warehouse Museum, Fanny Garver Gallery, Pilsbury Midwest Juried Exhibition, Seuferer-Chosy Gallery and Artspirit Sings. She also has sculptures permanently displayed at the Milwaukee Art Museum, Rahr-West Museum, Madison Art Center, the Marshfield Health Clinical and the Madison Public Library and was a lifelong supporter of the Wisconsin Public Radio. Yes, a talented sculptress was Mary, but she cherished her family more than a successful career could ever give her. Mary is survived by her son, Peter Michie; daughter-in-law, Deborah Michie; son, Adam (Cheryl) Michie; daughter, Sarah (Scott) Pressler; grandchildren, Mollie, Claire, Ryan, Aaron, Jeremiah, Jessica and Joshua; and many precious great-grandchildren; brother, David (Mary Ellen) Miller; and many nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Norm “Mick” Michie; second husband, Robert H. Udall; son, Chris Michie; brothers, Buster and James; sisters, Georgia and Joanne.A Celebration of Mary’s life will be held at a later date.Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

Mom recently told me that the reason she and Dad were able to travel the world so freely was because her parents’ dairy farm, near Ripon, was “the rock that they could come home to”. She credits her family for making it possible. In her last few weeks she shared the wonderful stories that made up her life. The world is a better place for having had her in it, and a sorrier place now that she’s gone. She always loved a good party, so be sure to bring your musical instruments to her memorial when the time comes.

We extend our sincere condolences to Mary's family and friends. I have the most fond memories of Mary during the 1960's, while visiting Chris at the Michie household in Crestwood,to practice guitars. It was my first exposure to modern art that festooned the walls. I still remember her pottery wheel and the smell of fresh clay emanating from her ceramics studio. But mostly I remember how sweet and kind she was, always encouraging our budding musical endeavors.

I will always remember Mary fondly. My husband (Dave Wood) tells stories of his childhood, which often include Mary and her family. She was a sweet and gentle soul and will be greatly missed. Rest with the angels, Mary.

Mary and I worked together on a most important and complicated art piece in 1980 - I was the painter and she sculpted a commemorative panel which held a memorial light. My contribution was a large oil-on-canvas, hers was cast in bronze, and they were installed as companion pieces. I had already known Mary when we undertook this historic project and very much enjoyed working with her. I respected and admired her professionalism and her wonderful ideas. I was sorry to read of her passing and will always remember her for the light that she was.
