MADISON/STOUGHTON-Richard E. "Dick" Serstad, age 81, of Stoughton, passed away on Friday, July 14, 2017 at home with his loved ones at his side. He was born on April 2, 1936, in Chicago, IL, the son of Earl and Alice (Pauli) Serstad. Dick attended Madison Central High School and served with the 115th Air National Guard from 1956 to 1962 with a rank of Airman 2nd Class. He married Barbara Marshall on August 17, 1957 in Madison. Together they raised two children that meant the world to them. Even after divorcing in 1981 they continued to be close friends and celebrated family together. For over the last decade Dick enjoyed sharing his hobbies, his family and his everyday life with his dear friend Pat Listol, who was with him until his passing and provided him with love, comfort and support. Dick was employed as a steamfitter and was a member of the Steam Fitters Union Local 601 (previously local 394) since 1957. Dick had a variety of interests including golf, skiing, telling stories, collecting classic cars, bike riding and socializing with his many friends, but enjoyed most the time he spent with his family. Richard is survived by his children; son, Scott (Jodi) Serstad, daughter, Susan (Allyson) Serstad; seven Grandchildren, Aaron (Tracy) Serstad, Cody (Kelly) Serstad, Chad (Chelsey) Serstad, Tony (Morgan) Serstad, Sean (Erica) Serstad, Cassandra (Matt) VanWormer, Thomas VanSchoyck; Four great-grandchildren, Gabe, Alaina, Olivia and very soon to be "Baby Boy" Serstad; his special friend, Patricia Listol; and many other friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, aunts and uncles, and many close friends that served as his family since he was an only child.Memorial services will be held at GUNDERSON STOUGHTON FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 1358 Hwy 51, Stoughton, at 7:00 pm on Thursday July 20, 2017. Richard started to date my mom, Carol, after my mom and dad got divorced. He was a easy-going kind of guy. That big smile of his and the calm personality, made it real easy to talk to him. He gave good advice when I didn't have a father around who cared, but Richard did! We would ride around Lake Manona and he would tell me of all the houses he had worked in his career. I didn't get the chance to meet his children, but when he spoke of them, you could hear the pride in his voice. To his children, I am so sorry for your loss. He had one of the positive impacts on my life...And I am forever thankful for knowing him. Mark H.

I remember when Dick and my mom Carol Heitman were dating. He was very cool and made my mom happy. Some of us Heitman's went to school with his kids.
You were in our lives as young children and was a rock to us & gave us great advice. He will be missed by my Brothers & I & my sis. Memories are coming back to me & my siblings. God Speed Dick... Janice Heitman
