Obituary

MIDDLETON/CROSS PLAINS-Ronald William Knaus, 82, of Middleton/Cross Plains passed away on Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at Heartland Country Village in Black Earth, Wis., served lovingly by Home Health United Hospice.  He was born on July 5, 1935 in Chicago, Ill., the son of Laura and Joseph Knaus.  He married the love of his life, Mary B. Little, on Oct. 26, 1963.  Together they raised five wonderful children and had a blessed life of marriage for 53 years. Ron served in the US Army from 1958 to 1960. He was stationed in Germany. He has been a salesman for his entire life. He worked for Sears. Montgomery Ward and Catholic Knights Insurance Company.  Ron is survived by his wife, Mary; son, Ron Knaus; his daughter, Peg (Pat) Keeler; son, Joe (Jessica) Knaus; daughter, Jenny (Kevin) Klepper; daughter, Mary (Peter) Merritt; brother, Tom Knaus; sister, Laurie (Joe) Coffee; grandchildren, Jackson, Jonas, Lydia, Elie, Hannah; and many nieces and nephews who adored him.  He is preceded in death by his parents, Laura and Joseph Knaus.  For all of you who knew Ron, you understand how much he loved his family and friends. Ron loved being with people and developed deep, meaningful relationships with so many.  He had many interests including participating in Civil War reenactments and shooting competitions. Ron sang with the Madison Maennerchor for 37 years. Ron was a known historian with a passion for military history, especially the Civil War and World War I and II.  Tradition and ceremony were very important to Ron and he kept them alive within his family and the many clubs in which he actively participated.  He loved and fostered the Slovenian traditions for Easter, teaching the family how to respect and honor their culture.  Another example of keeping ceremonies alive, was Ron’s involvement in bringing Wreaths Across America to the area with the Sons of Union Veterans.  Throughout the years, it was not unusual to see Ron participating in parades and ceremonies to honor veterans.  Ron loved the outdoors and spent time every summer at the family cottage swimming, boating, and fishing. He was an avid hunter and target shooter. He and Mary traveled to many wonderful places over the years.   A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. BERNARDS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 7450 University Ave, Middleton, at 11 a.m. on Friday July 21, 2017, with Fr. Brian Wilk presiding. Judy, Kelly, and I offer our sincere condolences to you, Mary, and to your entire family. Ron was a great guy, always a smile, once in a while a song, and at the RAC Christmas Party, a jolly ho ho ho. He will be missed. Bob Story family

Sweet sweet Ron. We thank you for the joy and laughter you brought into our office and our lives. From the great stories you'd share with Steve and I and your friend John, our "happy dances" , the twinkle in your eyes when you'd speak of your Mary, you brightened up all our days. You will be missed beyond words. We will leave your desk as it is so if you'd like to come visit it will be there for you. We love you Ron. To Mary, You have our deepest sympathy. How lucky you were to have such a wonderful man. I pray that you and your family find peace in your hearts. I can't even imagine how many hearts Ron touched in his life time and now...he is an angel in heaven watching over all those that he loved. We will miss him so. Please don't be a stranger Mary. Come by and talk with us when you can...we would very much enjoy that. Our prayers to you. Love, Steve and Lee

I want to thank Ron for coming into our lives . Ron sold us insurance . It only took 45 minutes but then Ron and Pat found a common hobby, shooting. Ron and Pat talked for a couple of hours. Ron recruited Pat for Civil War skirmishing. Poor Mary was wondering what happened to Ron. I also want to thank Ron and Mary and family for inviting our family over to celebrate the holidays since our families lived far away. I have wonderful memories of Ron's speech on the Slovian tradition of Easter. The Knaus family became a second family to us. We will miss you Ron. The last memory is my favorite memory. Ron took my dad and husband with his friends on a Lake Michigan fishing trip. My dad would talk about this fishing trip frequently. My dad and Ron became friends and was supportive of my mom when my dad died. I would like to think that my dad and Ron are now fishing, drinking beer and eating cheese together. Rest In Peace my friend.

Barb and I did not know Ron well. And our paths crossed infrequently. But this much we did see: Ron cared about everyone. He always had a smile or a kind word. I think he did God's work in the best way that anyone can: love thy neighbor. Barb and Greg Sheehy

Mr. Knaus, I am forever grateful and a better person for having spent many hours driving around Southern Wisconsin with you. We talked Cubs, religion, life, cheese sandwiches from Monroe, German marching bands and history. Never business! I will always be indebted to you for the life's knowledge and perspective you imparted on me. I will never forget you and I "selling" Mary and Alexandra on letting you have that second beer at our wedding. We won that round my good man! You were like a grandfather to both Alexandra and I, we will miss you dearly. Love, Geoff and Alexandra Leedle
