WSJ- SUNDAY 6/18 Photo Roemer, Richard B. “Rick” MADISON - Richard B. “Rick” Roemer, age 65, of Madison, passed away too soon, on Tuesday, June 13, 2017 at SSM Health Hospital. He was born on April 1, 1952, in Madison, the son of Richard and Nelda (Dossey) Roemer. Rick graduated from LaFollette High School and UW Platteville. Rick worked as a police officer for the City of Madison Police Department for 30 years, retiring in 2007. He met the love of his life, Susan, in 1982 and had their first date on New Year’s Eve of that year. They were united in marriage on May 9, 1998 at the Little Chapel of the West in Las Vegas, Nevada. Rick was a private man, for whom family came first, including his dog children. His protective nature and kind, gentle spirit made him the hero of the family, especially to his daughter, Andrea “Drew.” Rick is survived by his loving wife, Susan; daughter, Andrea (Mike) Northwood; two grandchildren, Alex Lippman and Jaxon Lucarz; father, Richard; sister, Nancy (Kevin) Judd; several other loving family members. He was preceded in death by his mother, Nelda; two brothers, Ronald and Mark; and sister, Kathleen. A memorial gathering will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL & CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Dr., Madison, on Thursday, June 22, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. A private memorial service will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

Rick was an outstanding police officer who led by example. A man of few words, when he spoke you were well served to listen. He was quick to help, enjoyed a good joke, and endeavored to do good. He adored his family and distinguished the badge. His was a life of dignity. maryanne thurber

To Rick's family.....
I knew Rick as a young boy. He lived next door to us in our first home on Pinchot. Rick was a nice young man. Nancy and Rick spent lots of time with the "New Kids" (us) next door. My husband and I were only 20 years old. Rick's grandmother was a big help to me when we had our first child. We knew NOTHING about babies. Both Rick and Nancy would help us out with any number of things. Rick loved the hammock we had in the back yard. He was all boy, but a real sweetheart.

I was fortunate to work with Rick very early in my career. Steady, kind, smart, and always ready to smile and laugh. He really led by example, showing a new officer how to go about the job with dignity. I was glad to know him in a small way. May his memory be eternal. - Dean Baldukas

Rick was one of my favorite people to work with at the MPD. He was a very professional, competent and fair officer.
