John Elmer Carey

MADISON-John Elmer Carey, age 91, of Madison, passed away on Thursday, June 8, 2017. He was born on July 9, 1925, in Madison, the son of Elmer J. Carey and Julia A. Maher. John served in the United States Marine Corps and saw combat in Okinawa, Japan and the Guadalcanal Campaign during World War II. He served in China after the war and in the Korean War as well. John worked as a postal clerk for the Madison Post Office for over 30 years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was especially fond of summers spent at Red Lake in Minnesota with his daughters. Later in life John took up golfing and spent many months every year traveling to Hawaii where he enjoyed golfing and socializing with friends. He also loved running and walking and competed in many marathons over the years. John is survived by his daughters, Louise (Al) Couillard, Ramona (Joe) Keyes, and Veronica (Bob) Olson; and his granddaughters, Chelsea Couillard and Kathie (Kevin) Brohaugh. He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Julie McCann; and brother, Thomas Carey. Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison at 5 p.m. on Thursday June 15, 2017. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 2 p.m. until the time of the service on Thursday. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery at a later date.
