Lola Mae Welke

MADISON-Lola M. Welke, age 85, of Cottage Grove, passed away on Saturday, May 13, 2017, at Aster Assisted Living. She was born on Nov. 13, 1931, in Watertown, S.D., the daughter of Frank and Ethel (Marsh) Cook. She graduated from Central High School in Madison. Lola married Joseph Welke on Dec. 2, 1950, in Madison. She spent many years as a cashier for businesses on the East side, including C & P, Walgreens and Kroger. Lola loved cardinals, and enjoyed knitting, Disney and books. Most of all she loved people and people loved her. Many will remember Lola as their favorite "babysitter". Lola is survived by her daughters, Diane (David) DuBenske and Cheryl Schwalbach; son, Joseph Welke (Pat Knuth); six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joseph; her brothers; and a sister. A celebration of life will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Dr., Madison, at 6 p.m., on Friday, May 19, 2017. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 4:30 p.m. until the time of the service on Friday. A private burial will be held at Roselawn Memorial Park.
