Orpha E Subola

POWHATAN, Va. / MADISON - Orpha Subola, age 95, died peacefully at home in Powhatan, Va., on Dec. 26, 2020. Orpha Ellen Elliott was born Oct. 19, 1925, in Orion, Wis., to James and Viola (Dary) Elliott. She met Peter Subola in 1942 while he was stationed at Truax Army Air Field in Madison, Wis. They corresponded while he was stationed in The Philippines and were married on Oct. 26, 1951. They enjoyed seeing country artists such as Ernest Tubb, Red Sovine, and Charlie Pride. They also liked dancing and socializing with friends. Pete preceded her in death in 2001. Orpha spent her final years in Stoughton, Wis., with her brother, John, and then in Powhatan, Va., with her daughter, Arla. She is survived by her children, Viola Shulze of Decorah Township, Wis., Nancy (Bob) Gray of Springville, Utah, Arla (Ned) Halpin of Powhatan, Va., Alan (Nichole) Subola of Minneapolis, Minn., and Mark (Annie) Subola of Madison, Wis.; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Pete; sisters, Marjorie and Nancy; brothers, Cecil, Leslie, William and John; and grandsons, Duane, Paul and Brad Schulze. Orpha enjoyed the role of family matriarch. She loved family picnics and parties and was in daily communication with her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She loved taking family pictures and sending letters. She was a faithful and active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. A celebration of Orpha’s life will be held Saturday, Jan. 2, 2021, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 825 S. Van Buren St., Stoughton, Wis.
