MADISON/STOUGHTON -David Alden Sperstad passed away at his home on Monday, May 1, 2017, as a result of cardiac arrest. He was born on June 9, 1955, in Manchester, N.H., the son of Sidney and Elizabeth "Betty" (Phelan) Sperstad. David graduated from Stoughton High School. He worked as a waiter at his parent's restaurant, Sperstad's in high school and later at the Greenhouse in the Concourse Hotel, where he enjoyed his work and made many lifelong friends. David spent his last years enjoying his work at Der Rathskeller in the UW Memorial Union. He retired a year ago, but spoke highly of his time there, giving credit to working with the students who he said, "kept him young". David was proud of his family and his Norwegian heritage. David is survived by his sister, Sonja Newell; brothers, Dana and Donald; two nephews, Denzel and Jason; niece, Marisa; great-niece and great-nephew, Sky and Jason III; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. A celebration of David's life will be held at BABE'S, 5614 Schroeder Rd., Madison, at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 28, 2017. David was genuine, and very fun person to work with.
A truly nice human being who cared about the personal struggles of the people around him.
At a young age when most people tend to be self absorbed, David was an ambassador of positivity and kindness. A gentleman by definition. A friend by my good fortune.

David was a true gentlemen, he was caring, funny, loving, positive, and an all around great guy. (His mother Betty was my godmother), we had talks, and he was an inspiration to me, he was a good advice giver, he made you see things in different ways, David I will miss the text messages, talks, and helpful advice, you always will be in my thoughts and heart. Will miss you dearly!!!

Although I've only seen you at random family reunions over the years, I was so shocked and saddened to learn of David's passing. He was too young and I'm sure will be greatly missed. You all have my deepest sympathy.

Since Aunt Betty Ann passed away, there wasn't a birthday, Christmas, St. Patty's Day, Easter or Valentine's Day that I didn't receive a card from David. He was a kind soul with unlimited compassion. I am so glad we had our Phelan get together a few weeks back and I got one last hug. I know your Mother greeted you with loving arms. I will cherish those cards. Sonja, Donald and Dana you are in my thoughts and prayers and I am here for whatever you may need. Love you.

I am so sad for your loss. Davids Mom Betty and my Mom Joan were friends since Jr. High. David was always a kind and caring person even as a kid. When my Mother passed away in 2013 David sent me a beautiful card with pictures he had of my family. He will be greatly missed by all. ❤️
