Roger Kinson

STOUGHTON/MONONA-Roger D. Kinson passed away peacefully at Azura Memory Care on Monday, April 24, 2017, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's. He was born on Aug. 15, 1929, in Rockford, Ill., the son of Mary L. and Asa Kinson. Roger was a loved family man, active in his community, church and career. He attended the University of Missouri on a five year football scholarship where he was their star Center. Roger was elected to the College All Star Football Team in 1952, and graduated with a degree in Business Administration. He was drafted by the Washington Redskins, but due to injuries opted to forego that honor and joined Oscar Mayer, Inc. Roger's career with Oscar Mayer spanned several decades. He began in 1952 as a pre-supervisory trainee and after numerous promotions, ended his career as a Plant Manager and Corporate Vice President for Urbandale, Iowa plant. Roger was an active member of his community and served as Alderman for the Town of Monona and on the Dane County Board of Supervisors. He also served in his church at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church as a follower of the Lord, chairman of the Property Committee, congregation president and a member of the Pastoral Call Committee. In addition, Roger was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Beardstown, and served on the Church Council and Pastoral Call Committee. During his time in Beardstown, he served on the Board of Directors of the First National Bank of Beardstown and was a participating member of the Elk's Club. Roger was also a proud 6-gallon blood donor with the American Red Cross through the span of his life. He achieved many things in his lifetime but was most proud of those he leaves behind. Roger is survived by his wife of 63 years, Nancy; sons, Gregory (Carol), Jeffrey, Bradley (Elaine) and Douglas (Barbara); daughter, Kristi Kinson; grandchildren, Bryce Kinson, Brady Kinson, Tyler Kinson, Coleman Kinson, Cassidy Kinson and Kaley Kinson; sister, Marleen Peterson; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Maxine and Janet; brother, Doug; brother-in-law, Stan Fiese; and numerous close friends. Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Dr., Madison at 12 noon on Thursday, May 4, 2017, with a luncheon to follow. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday. Memorials may be made to St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, Agrace HospiceCare or Azura Memory Care. These institutions were instrumental in the care of Roger in his final days and as a family we are grateful for their kind and loving care for our husband and father.
