Obituary
MADISON/ POYNETTE-Charles Eugene "Gene" Charmley, age 89, passed away at Agrace HospiceCare, on Sunday, March 26, 2017, with his family by his side. He was born on Oct. 14, 1927, in Madison, the son of Charles Clayton and Loretta (Craker) Charmley, the oldest of four children. Gene attended Madison East High School and joined the U.S. Navy after graduation. He served for four years during the Korean War on the U.S.S. New Jersey battleship. Gene enjoyed this venture in his life and looked at is as being able to see the world, not as being in the war. After returning home, he attended UW-Platteville. After graduation he started his next adventure in life, teaching Science at Marshall High School. During this time he met and married Alice Anderson Roth in 1963. He also became step-father to Frederick and in 1965 they were blessed with a son, Charles Frederick. Alice and Gene both retired from teaching and traveled to many places, one being the Holy Land. Gene is survived by his sons, Frederick (Vicki) Roth of Allenton, Wis., and Charles F. (Liane) Charmley of Poynette, Wis.; three grandsons, Ben (Brooke) Roth, Corey (Ashley) Charmley and Kyle Charmley; brother, Richard (Rosemary) of North Carolina; sister, Susan Charmley of Kentucky; sisters-in-law, Charlotte Wilson of Janesville, Wis., and Joyce Charmley of California; and other relatives and friends. Gene was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 37 years, Alice; infant sister, Catherine Ann; brother, Thomas; sister-in-law, Luella Bisbee and brothers-in-law, Milo Bisbee and Hubert Wilson. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. THOMAS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 651 S. Main St., Poynette at Noon, on Monday, April 3, 2017. A luncheon will follow at the church. Interment will be at the Hillside Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church from 11 a.m. until the time of the Mass on Monday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Charles' name to the Poynette United Methodist Church or to St. Thomas Catholic Church. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

Dear Loved Ones of "Gene" - please accept my heartfelt sympathy. "Gene" was a wonderful man. As pastor of St. Thomas Parish in Poynette for 19 years, I was fortunate to know him. He came to Mass daily, and he and I often visited as he was leaving the church. We each had a Reedsburg connection that we could talk about among other things. Condolences to the family of Mr. Charmley. He was a beloved teacher to years and years of us, including my sister and brothers, at Marshall High School. We learned science and how to take his multiple choice tests. He challenged us in interesting and creative ways as learned our biology, earth science, chemistry and physics, back then all without computers. Even in a small school, he prepared many of us well. For me personally, he was very influential in my schooling and eventual career path. From Marshall, I went to the University of Wisconsin - Madison and majored in Biochemistry. Then I went on to the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and a bit later the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health. I have been practicing as a family physician on the West Side of Chicago for the last 22 years after working as a Peace Corps volunteer doctor in Africa for three years. I have extremely warm memories of Mr. Charmley, and I feel that he really was a key to what I turned out to do in my life. His family should really know that he affected many of us in his small science classroom in Marshall, and he truly lives on in our hearts and in our work. Sincere, sincere condolences to the whole family.
