COTTAGE GROVE-John M. Johnson, age 86, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 30, 2017, surrounded by his family. He was born Nov. 10, 1930, in Madison, the son of Ingvald and Hannah Johnson. John served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1949-1955. He married Jean Good on Aug. 4, 1951. John was a member and Past Post Commander of American Legion Post 248 in Cottage Grove. He was a builder and an employee of Chase Lumber for many years. John enjoyed hunting and fishing with his sons and friends and enjoyed many years visiting "Up North" at his son's cabin. He is survived by his wife, Jean; his sons, Steven (Jean) and Scott (Marla Kay); grandchildren, Christopher (Cris), Stephanie Johnson-Bakke (Kjersten) and Peter; his sister-in-law, Marlys (Doug) Johnson; brother-in-law, Blake (LeAnn) Good; nieces, nephews; great-nieces and nephews; and many friends. John was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Annabelle Thorstad; and brother, Robert Johnson. Memorial services will be held at BRYN MAWR PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 229 N. Main St., Cottage Grove, at 11 a.m., on Friday, April 7, 2017, with Pastor Matthew Ploeger presiding. Visitation will be held at church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com. Condolences. I remember a few of us from high school picking tobacco with him in the fall a couple of years. He was able to cut more than any of us. Pretty hard/dirty work but the spread put out for lunch was great.
