Obituary
OREGON – William J. (Bill) Meier, age 85, passed away unexpectedly Friday, Feb. 3, 2017. Bill married Betty McMicken, celebrating 61 years of marriage. Bill was an instrument maker for the UW-Madison Electrical Engineering Dept. for 30 years, where he was credited in many research publications. He was very active in the VFW Post 10272 providing services to veterans and the community. Bill is survived by Betty, his eight children, Judy (Bob) Walker, Cindy MacEwen (Mike Braley), Carol (Hector) Rodriguez, William Jr. (Rosemary) Meier, Joan (Kirk) Braley, Celia (Maurice) Meyers, Paul Meier, and Chris Meier; 15 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Sue Lehman, Betty Schroeder, Ann (Bill) May; brother-in-law Fred Kempfer; sisters-in-law Elda Meier, Tress Meier and Jean Buchanan; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Meier; his brothers, Eugene and Mel Meier; his sister, Mary Kempfer; his father and mother-in-law, Norman and Celia McMicken; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Martha Meier, Ernie Lehman, Gladys Short, Dorothy Williams, Bill Rowlands, Mae Klein, Roy McMicken, Sam McMicken, Ken Buchanan; his son-in-law Greg MacEwen; and his niece, Denise May. Bill will always be remembered as the great husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend he was to all. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at HOLY MOTHER OF CONSOLATION CATHOLIC CHURCH, 651 N. Main St. Oregon, at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2017, with Father Gary Wankerl presiding. Burial will follow at Prairie Mound Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2017, at GUNDERSON OREGON FUNERAL & CREMATION CARE, 1150 Park St., Oregon, where at 7 p.m. VFW Post 10272 will do a Pass In Review at 7 p.m. Visitation will also take place at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Wednesday.

We offer our condolences to you and the family for the loss of Bill. He was a great veteran and a wonderful person to be with.
The distinction and warmth he had for all of us veterans and smile he had at the ceremonies will be remembered. I admired his ability to step to the plate and volunteer and provide leadership at several events. The parades, funerals, and Memorial Day celebrations were something I enjoyed with Bill and his insight of life was so rewarding.
We wish we could be with you and the family Betty during this loss, but we are spending our winters in Texas. Keep the memories of Bill and God be with you all.

Bill, Rosemary, Rachel, and Carolyn. We are so sorry to hear of the passing of your father and grandfather. Although we never had the opportunity to meet him, it is clear that he was a special person based on the values and sense of community he passed onto his son, Bill. and his grandchildren. I am sure you are all a special reflection on his life.

To the entire Meier family. My deepest sympathies to all of you during this painful time. Bill was a wonderful man. I do the announcing for the OHS hockey team and I always looked forward to seeing him at every Oregon home hockey game. It is, and always will be a honor to introduce him and the rest of VFW post 10272 before the playing of the national anthem and the shaking each veterans hand and thanking them for their service. He always greeted me with a smile and handshake and a 'Hi Jimmy'' whenever I ran into him. He loved his country and loved his family deeply. I know he set a wonderful example for all of his kids and Grand kids. He will be missed by many. Respectfully, Jim Snow.

Uncle Bill will sure be missed. Take comfort that he is with his family that crossed over before him. I know they will all be watching over the Meier family this week.
It's a difficult road from here, but if you lean on each other and take care of each other you will be ok.
