FITCHBURG-Janice Elaine Schmidt, age 79, of Fitchburg, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2017. She was born on March 27, 1937, in Maryville, N.D., the daughter of Peter and Viola (Prouty) LaFrance. She married Louis Schmidt on June 6, 1960, in Madison. Janice graduated from Mauston High School. After high school she attended MATC, where she studied bookkeeping. Janice worked as an accountant for many years at Zimbrick of Madison until her retirement. She loved to golf and played with many different clubs over the years. Janice enjoyed camping and traveling with her family. Her favorite was the many cruises they enjoyed after she retired. She was an exceptionally caring and giving person and volunteered many hours for Meals on Wheels and at the Fitchburg Senior Center. Janice is survived by her husband; daughter, Tammy (Tom) Gregg; sisters, Caroline Gallagher, Barbara Holien and Darlene Emery; brother, Jimmy Lafrance; sister-in-law, Charlotte Nelson; brother-in-law, Bill Schmidt; and many other good friends and relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters; and four brothers-in-law. A memorial service will be held GUNDERSON FITCHBURG FUNERAL HOME, 2950 Chapel Valley Rd Fitchburg at 2 p.m., on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2017. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from Noon until the time of the service on Tuesday. Memorials may be made to Agrace HospiceCare, 5395 E. Cheryl Pkway., Fitchburg, Wis. 53711. So sorry for your loss Lou and Tammy, she is up there with her sisters alot of catching up to do. I loved aunt janice and will always remeber her with fond memories. You are in my thoughts and prayers

I was saddened to hear of Janice's passing. Uncle Louie and Tammy, I'm so sorry for your loss. As life moves forward extended families seem to drift apart. I regret not having the opportunity to spend more time visiting you and Janice over the past few years. The many Friday and Saturday nights spent at your house as a child, with you and Janice during bowling season, is one of my fondest memories growing up. Janice was a good friend to my mother and she brought out this best in her. As a child I remember Janice inviting mother to a Halloween party. She even convinced mother to dress in a costume, which was so unlike her. This was the only time I remember seeing my mom so excited to go out not to mention going out dressed up as a HoBo. I never again saw my mother in costume. When mother passed in 2004, and again when dad passed in 2010, Janice provided our family much needed support and comfort. I have very fond memories of the many the Thanksgivings and other holidays spent at your house. When I host Thanksgiving dinner for my own much smaller family, I often think of Janice with amazement at how she brought everyone together for those large family holidays, making them enjoyable and seeming so effortless! I truly miss what Janice brought to our family at the holidays.
