MADISON-Alvin "Al" Edward Genske, age 88, of Madison, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2016, at Agrace HospiceCare after a long battle with Alzheimer's and recovering from a broken hip. He was born in Madison on Oct. 30, 1928, the son of Ervin G. and Malinda (Mueller) Genske. He married Leona Hasse on Nov. 7, 1953, and was a wonderful husband to her. Alvin grew up in Madison where he spent virtually his entire life. He most recently resided in Monona. Alvin served in the U.S.Navy aboard the U.S.S. Midway Aircraft Carrier from 1948-1952. His love of airplanes prompted him to be a member of E.A.A. for many years. Alvin worked at Oscar Mayer, first in beef-boning and then in the power plant until his retirement in 1990. He then worked part-time for several years at McGovern's in Sun Prairie and volunteered many hours at the Bethesda Thrift House in Madison. He was a member of Monona Evangelical Lutheran Church in Madison. Over the years, Alvin enjoyed playing golf, fishing and taking bus trips. He is survived by his son, Terrance (Cindy Lind) Genske of Waunakee; daughter, Diana (Charles) Guebert of Naperville, Ill; grandchildren, James (Jen) Genske of Madison, Abigail (Erik) Anderson of Lakeville, Minn., Timothy Guebert of Bothell, Wash. and Elizabeth (David) Debowey of Oak Park, Ill.; great-grandchildren, Brooke and Caleb Genske, and Alex Anderson; sisters, Eda Bade of Sun Prairie, Dolores "Tootie" Koch of Madison and Eleanor (Ray) Fallis of Awendaw, S.C.; sister-in-law, Dorothy Genske; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Alvin was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Leona; brothers, George (the late Fran) Genske and Arnold Genske. Funeral services will be held at MONONA EVANGELICAL CHURCH, 4411 Monona Dr., Madison, at 11 a.m., on Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2016, with the Rev. Thomas Nowak presiding. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Tuesday. How can I not think about Uncle Al and the great times we had at Grandma Hasse's -- softball in the back yard, shooting rockets, shooting the shotguns and pistols and of course throwing rocks in the river by Ennis's tavern. A great gentlemen and truly a second dad to use kids.
