Eldeen M Sedgwick

MONONA-Eldeen Joanne Mayne Sedgwick, age 77, of Monona, passed on to Heaven on Christmas morning, Dec. 25, 2016, at St. Mary's Hospital, Madison. She was born on Feb. 8, 1939, in Boscobel, the second child of Earl and Ann (Wetter) Mayne. Eldeen grew up on their farms at Homer and rural Wauzeka. She graduated from Boscobel High School in 1957. Soon after, she moved to Madison, living at first with her aunt, Florence Wetter. Eldeen's most notable jobs were for the Wisconsin State Historical Society in the 60's and MATC Foundation from which she retired. She was united in marriage to Dean Sedgwick in a lovely outdoor ceremony at Olbrich Gardens on July 7, 1973. They've lived their entire married life in Monona. Eldeen and Dean were blessed by the birth of their daughter, Dawn on April 26, 1976. The happy years of the late 70's and early 80's were filled with mothering, homemaking, gardening and earning her associates degree in accounting one class at a time. Eldeen and Dean were long time members of the Zion ELCA faith community. She served in many ways, most notably with the altar guild and baking the communion bread. Eldeen also participated in bible study fellowship. After retirement, she was a baby cuddler at Meriter Hospital. Eldeen and Dean also did some traveling. They were often in Buffalo City, Wisconsin after Dawn married Ben Holien and settled there. They were blessed by the birth of grandchildren, Karson in 2004 and Keira in 2008. Eldeen fought her whole life with medical issues, including four grueling open heart surgeries in 1948, 1974, 1994 and 2006. She never gave up. Her early years testified to the exceptional care of her mother and her last years to the exceptional care of her husband. Eldeen was a lady with a great sense of style and quality. She had almost infinite patience. She was sensitive, kind and concerned for everyone in her circle of family, friends and neighbors. Eldeen is survived by her husband of 43 years, Dean; daughter, Dawn (Ben) Holien; grandchildren, Karson and Keira; brother, Melvin (Arlene) Mayne; sister, Carol (Rick) Cass; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Jeanette (Marx) Anderson; nephew, Kent Mayne; and special aunts, Lucille Brown and Florence Wetter. Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Dr., Madison, at 1 p.m., on Friday, Dec. 30, 2016, with the Rev. Pat Siegler presiding. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday. Burial will be at Boscobel Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or Zion Lutheran Church. The family would like to give special thanks to Chariss Lewis, Ann Nockert, Lois Roth, Cheri Timpel, Heidi Briller and Vicki Rains; as well as, St. Mary's Hospital staff and Respiratory Therapists of 8 SE, and the Friday day shift at Devils Head Ski Patrol for all of their wonderful care and support over the years.
