Obituary
MADISON-Ronald G. Carlson, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 17, 2016, in Madison. He was married to Jewel (Scholl) on August 8, 1964 and they shared 52 years of lifetime experiences. They wintered in Palm Desert, Calif. for 13 years. At the Palm Springs International Film Festival, both Ron and Jewel volunteered and rubbed elbows with Hollywood stars. With golf a big part of his life, Ron volunteered at many PGA and other golf tournaments. The winters in Palm Desert allowed him to continue his love of golf where he recently achieved what all golfers dream of --'a hole in one'. Ron taught at Madison College, guiding students as they pursued careers in the travel industry. He loved to travel and expanded his opportunities by leading trips with Pete Wilmarth all over the world. Ron shared his many passions with everyone he knew, including his love of music, especially classical and operatic performances, his love of travel and learning new things and his enthusiasm for life. Over the years the Carlsons had five wonderful Wheaton terriers, each one a joy in their lives. An important part of their spiritual lives together has been the nurturing provided by Blackhawk Church. As a couple they demonstrated their love of friends and community. Ron will be greatly missed by his many friends, but especially by the love of his life, Jewel Carlson. A Celebration of Ron's life will be held at BLACKHAWK CHURCH, 9620 Brader Way (off Mineral Point Rd), Verona, at 1 p.m. on Thursday, January 12, 2017. You are invited to join us after the service for camaraderie and to share in sweets (Ron's favorite food!). Contributions in Ron's memory may be made to Road Home Dane County or St. Vincent de Paul Society. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

Ron's work in the Travel program helped lay the foundation for what is now a widely recognized program of international education at MATC. The Sister College partnerships that he helped create in Ireland and Germany are still active and we now have more than 20 study abroad opportunities annually. Thanks to Ron and his family who supported him in being such a pioneer in helping grow these efforts. He was ahead of his time! -- Geoff Bradshaw, Madison College Director of International Education

I have many fond memories of Ron and Jewel - a lovely, special and generous couple. It was always a pleasure to be in their company in Fermanagh and in Madison. Ron and Pete developed the Sister College relationship with Fermanagh College, Northern Ireland and as a result students and staff benefited greatly from the partnership Thank you for this. Ron shared his many passions with everyone he knew, including his love of music, his love of good food (especially desserts), his love of travel and learning new things and what impressed me the most was his enthusiasm for life. He was a great friend to us and I am so blessed to have met Ron . My prayers and thoughts are with Jewel at this sad time. Elizabeth Morrison Northern Ireland

Thoughts and prayers to all of Ron's family. I worked with Ron at MATC and found him to be a very personable and caring man. Since I worked in the PR department and Ron was in the Travel program we had lots of interactions regarding promotions. Peace to all at this sad time. -- Jan Bush
