Obituary
MONONA - Susan Marie Liber passed away on Monday, Nov. 20, 2023. She was born on May 30, 1945, to Harry and Julia (Maceluch) Liber in Morristown, N.J., the oldest of four children. She enjoyed her life in New Jersey, often visiting New York City with her younger sister, Mary. She attended Caldwell College for Women in Caldwell N.J., majoring in psychology, and became a certified chemical dependency counselor before moving to the Cleveland, Ohio area in the early 1980s. She remained in that career working at Carnagie Care Center, Ridgecliff Hospital/Willow Ridge Treatment Center, Laurelwood Hospital and The Lakewood AIDS Taskforce. After the uncertainty of 9/11, Susan and her good friend, Diane, moved to Wisconsin to be closer to Diane’s family and they enjoyed 23 great and happy years in Monona.
How do you describe someone who treats strangers like friends? To do so would be to describe Susan and her finest attributes; friendly, outgoing, helpful, and humorous. Susan’s journey was not always an easy one, but she drew from her strengths, her life lessons, and her strong faith in God to sustain herself and lift others up. Susan was an active member of 12-step programs and was committed to helping others heal. This support was evidenced by the many people who paid tribute to her by visiting her in the hospital and at Agrace HospiceCare.
Susan enjoyed reading, especially mystery fiction prior to her retirement, hearing dog stories, listening to the smooth jazz of the 70s and 80s and attending the recent top reviewed films, especially on Christmas days, when Cleveland’s very own “A Christmas Story” was playing.
Susan is survived by her beloved friend and lifelong companion, Diane Judson; her sister, Christine (Mark) Malen; many nieces and nephews; and a generous and loving 12-step family. She is preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Julia Liber; her brother, Gregory (Jan) Liber; and her sister, Mary Jane (Paul) Thompson.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH, 5101 Schofield St., Monona, at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 27, 2023, with Father Chad Droessler presiding. A visitation will take place at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass on Monday. A private inurnment will take place at a later date.
