Verna Christine Schulz

MADISON-Verna Schulz, our mom, grandma, great-grandma and great-great-grandma, passed away on Sunday, May 7, 2017. She was born on April 23, 1918, in the Danish settlement of Dannavang, Wis., the third child of five born to Paul and Gladys (McLain) Jensen. She married Lloyd Schulz on Feb. 1, 1938. They had been together for 61 years before Lloyd succumbed to COPD. In those years they produced seven kids, 20 grandchildren and are continuing to keep the DNA blend going through 47 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren (plus two on the way soon). Verna had seen many changes in her 99 years of which she loved to tell stories; like riding to a one-room school in a horse pulled wagon and going to downtown Chicago as a teenager to see if she could spot John Dillanger. She had a great love of travel with no fear of flying, especially if it was for a gambling trip to Las Vegas or a bus trip to Ho Chunk. As a grandma, she loved going to the "cousins' parties" because she "started it all", where in her 80's she was known to do jello shots with them. Verna is survived by six children, Rolland (Adelia), Darrell (Rita), Carol Zick, Diane Scott, Chris O'Connor-Burrill (Bruce); Carmen Huston; and daughter-in-law, Kathy (Gerald) Schulz; 20 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great grandchildren, with two more on the way; and many other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lloyd; son, Gerald "Skeeter"; son-in-law, Duane Zickone great-grandson; one great-great-granddaughter; brother, Bud; and sister, Floy. A celebration of Verna's life will be held at GUNDERSON FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Dr., at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 12, 2017. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 11, 2017, and from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday. The family would like to thank her caregivers at Aster Assisted Living where she spent her past three years.
