Obituary

STOUGHTON - Norman James Thede, age 92, of Stoughton, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 29, 2022, at Stoughton Hospital. He was born on Oct. 3, 1929, in Town of Main, Wis., the son of Lonson and Esther (Freeman) Thede.


Norman received his master’s degree from UW-Whitewater in education.  He married Eloise Steward on May 26, 1951. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and served in Germany for nine months.


Norman enjoyed a long career as an elementary school teacher. In addition to teaching in the Stoughton Area Public Schools, he was Principal at the former Springfield Elementary School from 1964-1968; taught at a Navajo Indian Reservation in Many Farms, Ariz., from 1968-1969; and was principal at Western Koshkonong Parochial School from 1990-1996. Norman was a member of Phi Delta Cappa and the Western Koshkonong Church.


Norman is survived by his wife, Eloise; daughter, Cheryl Olson; sons, Kent (Stephanie) Thede and Don (Linda) Thede; 12 grandchildren, Ryan Thede, Katrina Thede, Tristan (Erica) Thede, Shane (Brittany) Thede, Trevor Thede, Lacy (Andrew) Johnson, Brandon Olson, Erin (Joey) Ortiz, Heather (Jordan) Rose, Laura (Michael) Schumer, Kyle Snamiska, and Ella Snamiska; and 11 great-grandchildren, Brody Nicholson, Beatrix Johnson, Charlotte Schumer, Timothy Schumer, Leo Schumer, Ronan Thede, Aria Thede, Mazzy Johnson, Macy Rose, Hayden Rose, and Bradley Gardner; son-in-law, Paul (Amy) Snamiska; three siblings, Wendell (Pamela) Thede, Colin (Diane) Thede, and Betty Rogney; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Kim Ivan Thede; daughter, Dale Ann Snamiska; son-in-law, Rick Olson; and 11 siblings.


Visitation will be held at WESTERN KOSHKONONG LUTHERAN CHURCH, 2633 Church St., Cottage Grove, on Friday, Oct. 7, 2022, from 12 noon until the time of the service at 2 p.m. Burial will follow at Western Koshkonong Cemetery with full military honors. Mr. Thede was an amazing math teacher. I know teaching middle school may have been a challenge at times but he made this girl feel so very proud of her math skills. I'm thankful to have known him.

The words, actions, kindness and confidence Mr. Thede instilled in me as a young student at WK are a blessing I’ve continued to benefit from throughout my life. He believed in me and challenged me to always do my best, which at such a young age was a firm foundation I am thankful for. From our fun days “Doseedo-ing” our partners around the Western Koshkonong basement during gym class to the hard math facts he drilled into our heads, to the memorable Wyalusing and nature trips—he served us well as a teacher and gave the incredible gift of a love of learning and exploration. Although I left Stoughton many years ago it was always a pleasure to run into Mr. and Mrs. Thede around town and I will miss those smiles and encounters, as I assume the many children of Stoughton taught by Mr. Thede will as well. Sincere condolences to Mrs. Thede, Cheryl, Lacy, Brandon and all of your family. Thank you for sharing Mr. Thede with us all.
