Obituary
STOUGHTON-Arlene Marie Gehrke, age 84, of Stoughton, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2016. She was born on April 2, 1932, in Edgerton, the daughter of Arthur and Agnes Snyder. She married Lowell Gehrke on June 16, 1951. Arlene worked at American Family Insurance, later was a teacher at South School and librarian at Kegonsa School in Stoughton. Arlene is survived by her husband, Lowell, of 65 years; two children, Susan (Bob) Dietzman and Gary (Penny) Gehrke; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Muriel Homberg; two brothers, Truman and Winston Snyder; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and one great-grandchild. A gathering celebrating Arlene's life will be held at GUNDERSON STOUGHTON FUNERAL HOME, 1358 Hwy. 51 N. at Jackson St., Stoughton, from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m., on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2016. oh Arlene where do I begin, the fond memories of working with you at Kegonsa, our moments
of outburts of laughter, our coffee chats at your place and mine. So many times I thought of
you over the years. I replaced you when you retired from the library but did continue to see
each other until we just both got busy and always took care of our families, I will never forgot the
time you took the stitches out yourself when you told me you were walking to the hospital and
decided not to and did it at home and then called me and told me this. Are you crazy lady and then
we laughed and laughed. You are so missed with us not hearing that laugh, smile, grumbling to
yourself, what a friend you were. So sorry we did not get together over the last years but you will
NEVER be forgotten.

I worked with Arlene for one school year; South School, probably in the late 70s or early 80s. As a younger teacher, I appreciated the wisdom and wit of Arlene, whom I considered to be the "boss of the school" thanks to her candid opinions, leadership and fortitude. Her sense of humor was contagious and we had the best of times together at South School, which closed after that year. I will always think of her when I hear the command "Shake a leg!" or "Don't be such a cry baby, it's a long way from your heart!" I also treasure many of the recipes she handed down to me; especially the one entitled "Arlene's big, fat, white cookies". May her soul rest in eternal peace, and I am a better person for having known her. My deepest sympathy to her entire family.
