Obituary

STOUGHTON- Barbel I Ramthun, age 79, a resident of Skaalen Nursing Home since 1996, passed away on November 16th, 2022.  She was born in Germany the daughter of Paul & Gertrude. Barbel immigrated to the United States with her family in January 1952, at which time they moved to Kewaskum, Wis.

Barbel found her home in and lived her mission while a resident of Skaalen. For many years she motored herself through the halls, proudly wearing the honorary title of ‘Mayor of Skaalen’. There she was actively involved: called bingo, volunteered in Magnolia Gardens, served on Resident Counsel, sang in the church choir, regularly participated in bible study, and was always willing to listen and lend her wisdom to others.  

Thank you to Barbel’s Skaalen family who provided compassionate care, showed her true friendship and much love over the years. Her smile, voice and sass will be missed. Barbel’s daughter (Debbie) and son (Paul), along with her grandchildren and extended family members will always see Skaalen as the light of Barbel’s life and will cherish her memories there along with her loved care givers.

We can all learn from the way Barbel viewed life and maintained a positive attitude no matter what she faced. She was strong in her faith and was at peace knowing that she would one day be walking freely again.

In addition to many friends and her ‘Skaalen Family’ survivors include her daughter, Debbie Murphy of Madison; son,  Paul (Stacie) Ramthun of Chatham, Ill.; grandson, Collin Murphy; granddaughters, Taylor Murphy, Marissa and Amanda; great-grandchildren, Brayden, Eva, Anthony, and Isaiah: and sisters, Ursula Carson of Champaign, Ill. and Margot (George) Karam of Arvada, Colo. She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Bruno and Joseph Dreblow.

No public services are planned. In lieu of flowers please consider making a memorial donation to Skaalen "The Spirit Team" a fund to recognize the staff of Skaalen. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

As an agency nurse, I always enjoyed being on the unit taking care of her. We often talked about Days of Our Lives tv program. She loved everyone who she came in contact with. Run free sweet lady.. your chains are gone, you've been set free...condolences to your family.

RIP Barbel. Some years ago I was surprised to see you at Skaalen. We went to high school together in Kewaskum, WI., Class of '63. I enjoyed our visits the last few years. Our sympathy to your family.

Barbel will always be in my thoughts as she was "family" to me over all the years I worked at Skaalen. From taking her to the VFW to hear Jesse Walker play to bringing in one of my Christmas gingerbread wreaths these memories will always be in my mind
