Obituary
MIDDLETON-Gregory Herman "Greg" Krantz, age 77, of Middleton went to be with the Lord on Thursday morning January 19, 2017. Greg passed quietly in the presence of family after a battle with Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease. Greg was an amazing guy who never met a stranger. His strong work ethic, quick wit, curious nature, and ability to talk to just about anyone, made him really fun to be around. Having been raised on a dairy farm in Dane county Greg was no stranger to hard work. He followed a path to his lifelong profession as a carpenter after moving to Middleton. You can see the evidence of his work all around Madison and he was especially proud of his role in building the Red Gym and the Hospital at the University of Wisconsin. Greg was a Gold lifetime member and dedicated supporter of the Carpenter's Local Union 314 in Madison, where he rarely missed a meeting. Greg was also an avid snowmobiler, member of the Speedway and Mt. Vernon clubs and an advocate for cooperative trail use around the area. He could groom a rough trail smooth and was a master at helping landowners open their property for recreational use. Greg also loved to ride his motorcycle. He often participated in the local MDA fundraiser rides, and took great pride in his long hauls around the country with his biker buddies. In retirement, Greg continued working with the City of Middleton in the Public Lands Department where he dabbled in outdoor projects and created amazing carpentry displays in City Hall. Greg will be missed most by his family; surviving are his wife of 56 years Jane (Odegard) Krantz, his daughter Cindy Krantz, of Madison; son, Michael Krantz (Jill Rowe Krantz) of Virginia, and daughter, Jody Greiber (Greg Greiber) of Waunakee; his grandchildren, Keenan and Kyler Krantz and Morgan and Adam Greiber. Greg's amazing surviving sisters are Carol Hagen of Mt. Horeb, Charlene Dugan of McFarland, and Eleanor Lawry of Oregon. He was preceded in death by his parents Anthony and Loretta (Kalscheur) Krantz. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. BERNARD'S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 7450 University Ave., Middleton at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 24, 2017 with Father Brian Wilk presiding. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON WEST FUNERAL & CREMATION CARE, 7435 University Ave., Middleton from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Monday, January 23, 2017 and also at the church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass. The family wishes to thank the staff of Homestead Living in Waunakee for their incredibly loving care; the staff of Agrace Hospice Care for their tenderness, guidance, and council and the Carpenters Local 314 for a lifetime of support. In lieu of flowers or gifts in memory of Greg, please make donations to Homestead Living Inc., 1040 Quinn Dr., Waunakee, WI 53597; The Creutzfeldt-Jakob Foundation for research at www.cjdfoundation.org/donate. Dear Jane, Jody, Cindy and Mike,
I have thought often of Greg this past year and have spent this week remembering him daily. Without him, I would not have Jody, whom I can't remember not ever being a part of my life. He always, always made me feel welcomed, and appreciated (or pretended to) my silliness and rapid teenage speech. After I moved away and would go years without seeing him, he treated me as if I had just been at the house last week. He was a fun, kind, accepting man and I was lucky to have grown up around him. Thinking of you all. Love, Lorri
