Carol Ann was a child who grew up during The Great Depression and World War II. This was a time of sacrifice and rationing so you often didn’t have things that today would be unheard of. During and after the war, my mother, Verna, would be in TB sanitariums and my father was in the Army Air Corp and later returned to civilian life and had to work. Because of this, Aunt Esther and Uncle Nolan took me in and treated me as their own. I still remember the wonderful smells emanating from Aunt Esther’s kitchen – what a wonderful cook she was! Uncle Nolan was a kind, big man with one of my memories is of him shoveling coal into a very large furnace in the basement of their house, a memory in today’s world that we’ll never see!
Carol Ann often had to take care of me and was like an older sister that I never had. Carol and my age difference of 9 years was to her very irritating, but other times she found time to play with me. Those years of our youth remain a strong memory for me as Carol Ann was the only non-adult contact I had for periods of time.
Carol Ann and I stayed in contact as we went through our adult life. My formative years as a pharmacist in the Madison area kept me in touch with Carol’s husband, John, who was also a pharmacist.
Carol would often visit, especially when my mother lived with us and Uncle Len Kielgas would come and visit.
As with your passing, Carol Ann, our memories of a time and place of our youth has passed. A fond good bye to you, Carol Ann.
