STOUGHTON- Phyllis Jean (Hodges) Carlisle, age 89, passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by family on Friday, Dec. 15, 2017, in Stoughton, Wis. She was born in Madison, on May 13, 1928, to Ervin Hodges and Delores Chisman. She was united in marriage to Carl Carlisle on Dec. 13, 1947, and together they raised five children. Phyllis “Jean,” graduated from Stoughton High School. She worked for the Mendota State Hospital, Stoughton Public Library and home healthcare agencies. She is fondly remembered as the “Story Lady” when she worked at the library, and created lasting friendships with the people that she provided in-home care for. Phyllis was a kind, caring person, and touched the lives of many with her words of wisdom and encouragement. She is survived by her husband of seventy years, Carl; daughter, Nancy (Gary) Locke; sons, Richard Carlisle, David (Jeannine) Carlisle and William (Monica) Carlisle; daughter-in-law, Teresa Carlisle; twelve grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren. She is further survived by her siblings, Patricia (Gabriel) Colombe, Richard (Marlyn) Hodges, and Don (Erva) Chisman; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews; and family friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Gene Carlisle; daughters-in-law, Susan Carlisle, Elizabeth Williams; and sibling, Keith Chisman. Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2017. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Wednesday. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park Chapel in Monona. Phyllis’ family wishes to express their gratitude to the many caring people who were a part of her life, and the caregivers/friends at Stoughton Hospital Home Health and Agrace HospiceCare. Phyllis is my grandma and I would just like to share something that all if my friends would say any time they would meet her. Almost all of my friends would say how cool they thought grandma was and how much they liked her right off the bat. One of my very best friends said, and I quote, "your grandma is kind of a badass."
I always loved listening to grandma tell stories about me when I was little and I think my favorite one is the one of the first day they brought me home to meet Bandit (grandpa's dingo). Grandma told me that they laid me on the floor on a blanket and watched carefully as Bandit walked around and around my tiny body. He kept looking up at grandma to make sure it was ok to get closer. When he finally got close enough, he just laid down and cuddled up to me and I was his.
Grandma was one of my best friends, and someone I looked up to very much. I even told all my friends that some day, I wanted to be just like my grandma, because she was, and always will be, loved by everyone.
