Sondra Brooks

OREGON - Sondra A. “Sonnie” Brooks, age 77, of Oregon, Wis., passed away on Saturday, Oct. 9, 2021, after a long and protracted illness. Sonnie was born on Aug. 22, 1944, in Carthage, Ill., to Cloyd and Bonnie Mustain. She married Christopher H. Brooks on Sept. 1, 1967. They moved to Oregon in 1968, where they raised two children, Chris and Jessica. She loved being a part of the Oregon community, whether it was volunteering at the library, singing along with the choir at Holy Mother of Consolation, or playing cards and trading practical jokes with her friends. In her baby book, Sonnie’s mother noted “Sonnie is said to be very stubborn. I prefer to call her persistent.” That was as true at 77 years old as it was at 2. Sonnie was persistent, funny, sarcastic, loyal, and dedicated. She was quick with a joke, and quick to lend a helping hand. She loved to be the hostess - her kitchen was always open to anyone who wanted to drop by for a snack or a drink. Sonnie often said “Getting old ain’t for sissies.” Sonnie was certainly no sissy. Sonnie is survived by her brother, Bill Mustain; her daughter, Jessica Reed; son-in-law, Dave Reed; son, Chris; daughter-in-law, Holly Severson; grandson, Cassidy; and many cousins, step-cousins, family members, friends and kittens. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Chris; and her brother, Steve. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at HOLY MOTHER OF CONSOLATION CATHOLIC CHURCH, 651 N. Main St., Oregon, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2021, with Father Gary Wankerl presiding. A visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass on Wednesday. A graveside service will be held at MCKAY CEMETERY, East County Road 1950, Carthage, Ill., at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 14, 2021.
