Bernard Alfred Whitefield

SUN PRAIRIE – Bernard "Jack" Whitefield, age 93, with an angel as his first mate, sailed into the arms of Jesus on Monday, Jan. 2, 2017. Jack was born on Sept. 20, 1923, in Wouldham, England, the son of John and Mary (Smith) Whitefield. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the British Royal Navy during World War II, serving until 1946. Jack moved to Canada following the war. He was united in marriage to Joan Featherstone and together they had four children and raised their family in Waukesha. Jack provided for his family through a variety of occupations. He retired as an insurance adjuster at the age of 75. Jack married Betty Bemis Zeller in 1969, and they made their home in the Madison area. Together, they enjoyed bowling and dancing. Jack was a member of Hope Lutheran Church. He enjoyed playing pool, darts and horseshoes. Jack's ability to work with his hands was endless, he could create or repair anything (especially with PVC pipe). Jack is survived by his children, Bob (Christine), Marie (Keith) Weber, Joanne (Dennis) Nemeth and Terry (Jan); Betty's daughters, Bonnie Remitz, Judy Zeller and Deb (Dave Kasten) Zeller; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; eight brothers and sisters; wife, Betty; Betty's daughter, Jaqueline Lee; son-in-law, Florian; his first wife, Joan; and other relatives. A Memorial Service will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Dr., Madison, at 2 p.m., on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2017, with the Rev. Chris Lee-Thompson presiding. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 12 noon until the time of service on Thursday. Memorials may be made to your local Honor Flight or a charity of your choice.
